Bang Kapi market closed for 3 days to contain the spread of COVID-19

The Bang Kapi district office has ordered the closure of Bang Kapi fresh market for three days, starting Thursday, after 53 people working at and living around the market have been infected with COVID-19.

 

According to the Bang Kapi district chief, the first infection linked to the market was detected on May 5th and, subsequently, more cases have been found, including 37 on yesterday and today, raising the total to 53.

 

He blamed the spread of the disease on some of the infected not isolating themselves and continuing to pursue regular activities. He warned them that they may face a year in prison and/or a fine of 100,000 baht for defying the Communicable Disease Act and two-year jail term and/or a 40,000 baht fine for violating the Emergency Decree.

It's just a punishement.

 

The chief is upset, he lost face... So... voilà.... 3 days...

 

It's not a sound and rational health policy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't all who test positive supposed to go into hospital, or does he mean they were close contacts and didn't quarantine at home? If the former that's worrying, if the latter shows what happens when you don't provide a safety net of alternative income/support for people who have to home quarantine.

Just what the economy needs. Especially the economy of those living on thight margins, as it is the case for this market.

 

Interestingly enough, the disease didn't spread from this market to the close by Pantip Plaza or The Mall. Maybe rental spaces are just higher there...

The daily figures just do not equate to the real numbers of infections... they may well test & release figures known to them.. but in the real world thousands are walking around working as normal as they can't afford to be tested and quarantined for 14 days.
