Many areas in Narathiwat province were temporarily closed after Covid-19 Network Investigations reported that the strain of the virus found in South Africa was found among infected persons in the Tak Bai area.

They decided that Yakang floating market and walking streets near Phraya Sai Dam and Attarkiah Islamiah Institute would be closed for at least two weeks or until the situation is resolved.

Is that a poll involving expats only or the ordinary Thais? I highly doubt the average Thai even knows that the J&J and Moderna vaccines even exist.

Here is a similar study in Philippines among the ordinary folks:

Moderna scores only 1%....is that because they think it is bad and ineffective? Much more likely they've never heard about it.

Not directly related to vaccine  confidence but here is a screen shot from yesterday's  Phuket Times. If I am not allowed a screen shot then please delete it. It is in Thai but it shows the number of vaccine doses administered to date in Phuket and also shows that a further 229,000 have registered for the first hab of the next batch of 200,000 just delivered.

But under control.... IMHO it's now out of control.

Nothing like some good old fashioned panic during an epidemic.....

This variant is worrisome as it affects human immune response and can lower the efficacy of most vaccines.

it may require a higher percentage of the country to be vaccinated before herd immunity is possible. The group of scientists, who reported these findings yesterday to the Public Health Ministry, has been working with the Thai government throughout the Covid-19 pandemic studying genome sequencing in the virus.

Tend to agree there, although its mentioned in the OP there is a separate thread on the significance of the South African strain running here:

In Thailand, the variant was identified in three test samples from a cluster of infections that could be linked to illegal migration in the south of the country, the COVID-19 Network Investigations Alliance said in a report.

“The variant may impact human immunity response from the virus and reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine,” said the alliance, which conducts genomics surveillance and research and has worked closely with the government during the pandemic.

“This does not mean that the vaccines do not work but there must be an increase in the ratio of population receiving the vaccine,” the report said.

Yes it is in the OP but for me, so my opinion, is the possibility of numbers of infected being swept under the rug. The recent cases in factories etc do do not seem to be inluded. If they are then it would only be around a thousand give or take positives outside of these clusters. That would represent around a 50% reduction in positives from around a week ago before these many, many clusters began to be identified.

Please provide specific numbers of infections that are not included in the daily numbers.

Of the 3,382 new cases that were found in the past 24 hours:

- 1,325 were found via tests at medical facilities

- 1,592 via proactive tests at known clusters

- 460 via proactive tests at prisons

I wonder if the delay is because they tested positive and are now awaiting the second confirmatory test? Not sure if that is still the system being used by the authorities, but it might explain the delay.

or maybe they are in the numbers ????‍♂️

You may be confusing persons under investigation with actual infected people.

The actual numbers of infected in Phetchaburi is mucher smaller:

MoPH data released Sunday shows most of the latest increase in new cases that's driving today's record number of new general population COVID cases is coming from outlying provinces away from Bangkok:

On the trendline chart below, the red line is Thailand's national cases numbers, the blue line shows Bangkok and adjoining provinces, while the green line shows the case totals from the other remaining 71 provinces.

That's a reversal of the Bangkok and adjoining provinces trends that have had them leading in most of the third wave COVID outbreak up until now.

In Sunday's update, for the first time in many weeks, the total cases from the 71 outlying provinces exceeded the totals from Bangkok and adjoining provinces, led by hundreds of new COVID cases from a factory outbreak in Phetchaburi province.

It has been known for long time that the Thai borders are quite porous with all the neighbour countries. If any of them have a variant, sooner or later it will be here.

Is the Thai government OK with the current situation and covid numbers? It seems so,  as there are no  new major measures announced,  and probably will stay like this unless there is a major uptick in cases from the current figures.

The government should have done what the Hungarians did in regards to the vaccines - try to get as many as possible, form as many sources possible, and as quickly as possible. If a country has $60 billions revenue from tourists, it makes business sense to spend say $20 billions to buy vaccines and reopen the country faster.

Instead they opt to locally manufacture (with major delays) a single vaccine which is currently suspended in quite a few countries, and import random doses from a single Chinese manufacturer without any clear pattern and strategy.

Australia stuffed up the vaccination campaign in similar way (without the Sinovac imports), and the country won't reopen until some time 2022...the revenue lost would be far greater than the perceived savings of manufacturing a single type of vaccine locally.

There is major shortage of vaccines worldwide,  so little chance to correct the current strategy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_vaccination_in_South_Africa

The South African Pfizer vaccinations - 40 mil Pfizer ordered, 975k doses arrived.  How long it is going to take to get all?

and then we have unvaccinated masses going to a vaccine center in Pattaya all crowding in and fighting over a space in the line - sounds to me more like a super spreader hot bed

Ironically the "on site" vaccine sign up locations will likely be mass Covid spreading locations. Par for the course with the incompetent people running the show.

Multiply the daily numbers by 10 then you probably are about half way to the real numbers. I say this based on limited testing and the nature of statistical samples.

So zero proactive testing outside of known clusters and prisons or zero cases found through proactive testing outside of prisons or known clusters.

very difficult to know what to believe, so many contradictory reports from many sources and countries

What contradictory reports would those be. All the studies that measure such things show that Sinovac's vaccine is very effective at curtailing serious symptoms and death.

Wang Thong Lang police officers on Sunday night arrested about 60 employees and visitors at Faros Sauna in Bangkoks Ramkhamhaeng Soi 21 for allegedly violating the state of emergency, the Communicable Disease Act and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)s announcement.

The raid was conducted after people in the area informed police that the sauna was allegedly used for drugs and could spread Covid-19.

Police reportedly found packs of methamphetamine, a narcotic drug, a syringe and used condoms in the area, while 14 of about 60 employees and visitors reportedly admitted to using drugs.

The news briefing today said public health officials there had tested 698 high risk contacts to the Thai businessman who was the original source of the outbreak, and found 81 positive cases for an 11.6 percent positivity rate, along with two other linked cases in the community, for a total of 83.

Of those 83 thus far, 67 are still hospitalized, and 16 have recovered. No deaths thus far. The Thai businessman who was the source of the outbreak also has recovered and been released from the hospital.

Yes I was listening to it. I mentioned before in another post the time lag between testing and then actually discovering the variant allows it to spread more. However hopefully they've identified all the contacts and will be able to contain this. They are correct to seal the area's concerned

MoPH graphic showing the 2,922 general population new COVID cases reported Sunday is the highest single day tally of its kind since the start of the pandemic.

The general population tally includes all self-referred cases (shown in  blue) and cases found through outreach testing (shown in yellow). It excludes only the prison population cases shown below in gray, which have been sporadically reported.
