Thailand to tighten border controls after detecting South African COVID-19 variant

The approach to border security reminds me of that child's game, 'What's the time, Mr. Wolf?'.

Typical reactive rather than proactive response. Foresight isn't a trait of the generals.

Stop spreading the truth of  how it's  brushed under the carpet and always  has been along with almost everything else unless they need to "show" and example of how well they do in everything.

Sorry, my bad. Update on our Tesco, now closed for 2 weeks for cleaning, 55555

More closing gates after the horse has bolted. Although I cannot see it making any difference as the borders are to long and mostly jungle!

More guns than vaccines that's all they got, what do you expect from a military leader.

What did people expect from George Washington or Winston Churchill?

One has to assume you have issues with all military leaders not just those of a particular race.

I believe it's time to do more... spraying.

At the borders. Forest, trees, plants, ground...

To kill the virus.

More seriously... there is a "weak spot" in all the borders saga.... The ASQ system (controled quarantine for any people coming by air travel).

If the Covid situation within Thailand is getting out of hand (from a thai point of view)... don't you think politicians would not make the calculus :

-few people concerned

-most of them foreigners

-so big political and face gain to put this system on hold

We saw this temptation... when they lowered the quarantine duration from 14 days to 10 days... before to put it back very quickly at 14 days because of the new "wave" !

Let's not forget : this system was created (last year) when Thailand had very few cases... Today the situation is totally different. The fear is greater...

The fear should not be great, for variants are less dangerous then the original virus.

IT Will die when temp Stay high in the country. So if healthy and wat good, the immune system wil do the job!

So don't het afraid if you sanitize and be considering safety.

Stay out of infection zones.

You wil be safe!

Greetings

meanwhile they open up Phuket.

You would think that after the returning prostitutes saga last year, the saga of 'unwanted' immigrants from Myanmar and Laos, etc., and the current surge of Covid  from the Songkran free-for-all, that all border controls have been and presumably are, tightened already.

Would you not?

TIT ????

Delayed actions about vaccines, delayed actions on border controls

NO actions on traffic road deaths

And so it goes on...

elgenon,   re your question. Thailand is not the only country who are using dogs to sniff out COVID.      You should give google

a shot and see where the method began.     Just so you know Thailand is indeed.   Not the center of the world. or solar system or even Galaxy.

  Sorry to disappoint.

Committee busy all weekend to figure out, where Thailand has a border with Africa.

Movement restrictions will be severely hampered unless the necessary is in a brown paper envelope.

Maybe those two actually  fought somewhere instead of battling to get out of a wet  paper bag, then failing.

So.... let me guess: spraying the border jungle with disinfectant and putting up barbed wire didn't work?

You forgot the cameras that were installed......around the governments houses ????️

I really feel sorry for the PM and his 'yes men'. It must be so difficult to get the balance of military manpower right so as to control Covid and ensure all aspects of necessary military functions are functioning as normal.

Can you imagine the internal chaos that would certainly arise should soldiers be taken away from their normal functions such as cutting the generals' lawns or cleaning their cars. Then there is the inevitable failure to landscape their golf courses and cut the fairways.

Heaven forbid, we're talking about a potential mutiny amongst hundreds of 'should have been retired years ago' generals!

I certainly would  especially since the current Covid surge in Malaysia is now the worlds worst and has been an issue since the first week of May. The Malaysian government have very recently decided against re-introducing a nationwide, 2020-style lockdown. It is that serious.

The fact that Thailand hasn't proactively tightened the southern border restrictions is apparent. This new infection has been rather benignly palmed off to the media as due to the victim being "...visited by family who entered Thailand from Malaysia through an informal border crossing" indicates another epic failure of the armed forces to stop this open abuse of illicit border crossings.

Informal = illegal.

This is the sort of stuff that viable, opposition parties no-confidence motions need to be based on, not which minister is getting a free pass on illegal land purchases or which leader is staying in an army-provided house.

Get a bloody grip!

Ohhhh those leaky borders... trying to plug a hole that's been widened over the decades is not going to be easy.

They are still trying to work out how they can do the border patrols with their shiny new Chinese submarine.

The only Virus loose in Thailand -and the rest of the world for that matter, is Stupidity... and boy is it virulent.

Think the horse has bolted

Thailand has a 2,416 km land border with Myanmar and a 595 km with Malaysia.  Most of this doesn't have so much as a piece of string to tell you when you enter a new country.  How are they supposed to close that?

Makes me feel good reading this on a 15 day vaccinated quarantine lockup while people just walk across the border unchecked.  ????

Looks like Thailand is heavily reliant on low cost migrant labour and high paying international tourism.

Submarines are the answer...

Borders are notoriously hard to control, I mean look at the uk we are an island but the migrants cross the English Channel knowing they will more than likely get asylum, it’s so prolific that rubber dinghys in Calais are selling at inflated prices (pun intended) that’s if you can get one...it’s all down to money and as always there are people willing to ‘help’ for a price...but I would have thought that a military government would have the protection of their borders as a priority...

I wonder what "an informal border crossing" is?

No army/police/barriers/immigration officers? Surely not!

So you believe the insults are nothing to do with being ex military, more about paper bags?
