Thailand has gone through a lot with the pandemic.   The early responses seemed to be effective but the more recent problems have been more problematic.   Do you think the government could be doing enough or are they operating at the whims of foreign governments?

Still have some of the lowest numbers of cases and lowest deaths from Covid 19 in the world, despite having one of the lowest vaccination rates......so they must be doing something right.

Should have had total lock down in Bangkok and surrounding Provinces

Plus priority given  to  the old sick and care workers in the vaccine

Program

Seems the government is  more concerned on the Tourist Dollar

Phuket.   is a example

How about comparing UK, America or your home countries figures before saying how poorly Thailand is handling things?

Too early to compare. All the plaudits were out last year about how well Thailand had coped. Seems they were not coping at all. Put simply, Covid19 just had not arrived and taken hold. This seems to be Thailand's first wave. On current figures, they are not doing well.

Time will tell.

What a wasted opportunity or was it really a godsend because it stopped the protests.

Whatever the motives were, Thailand is right in the mire now.

Not only that....the single biggest factor in their 'success' last year was down to the Chinese government that banned their own citizens from traveling to Thailand.........The Thai government were more than happy to let them flood in.

I would say abysmal if I could spell it.

It all went wrong when they allowed Songkran to happen despite the fact that the 3rd wave had already started and with the UK strain to make it worse... Before that, they were managing the situation somehow.

The initial response of closing the country worked fairly well for the short term.  However, the quarantine requirement at great expense for non-Thais along with the ridiculous Covid insurance and COE was not well handled, especially for those with Thai families.  In addition, the whole vaccine fiasco wiped out any chance of reaching a decent outcome until the end of 2022.  The complete lack of good vaccines and the reliance on Sinovac has resulted in many unnecessary infections and deaths, and the country can now expect many more to come until more and better vaccines become available.  While Astra Zeneca is okay, the reality is simply that Thailand is not able to produce enough.

How is not having enough vaccines and relying on the worst one 'doing something right'?

Amazing how they managed to escape a major outbreak for more than a year, with pseudo closed boarders, masks on their chins and  toy thermometer check at 7/11. Unfortunately, they still seem to belive in this deaf and blind strategy, almost like their approach to the traffic carnage.

Would prefer a ZERO star option, or even a negative star option.

At every step the regime has taken the wrong step. Other than closing the borders - SOP - it's been a mess.

Now without a real vaccination plan we'll be fighting wave after wave.

Monkeys throwing darts could have been more successful.

Why is this even a question.  Clearly the World Health Organization has already established Thailand's ranking as a role model.

If only WHO knew the secret of time travel as you apparently do. This article was dated Nov 15, 2020. The only people being inoculated with covid vaccines then were those in phase 1, 2, or 3 trials.

You have spelled it correctly, and I agree. The two mistakes the government has made is not ordering vaccines as soon as they were available, and allowing travel during Songkhran. That well and truly unbolted the stable door.

Perhaps it was also a mistake getting themselves vaccinated, and flaunting the fact. That must be creating a lot of resentment among Thais who are unemployed due to their incompetence.

They did a good job at the start,

The Chinese government saved Thailand.......they banned their own citizens from traveling here.......Prayut was more than happy to keep the borders open......it was only later on they closed the borders to other countries.

Peopled don't remember that China actually banned its citizens from foreign travel before travel from China was banned by any country.

Think you can sum up Thailand's response to covid in two words - Lucky and Pathetic

  • Popular Post

Thailand got through the first and second wave relatively well, and that probably made the powers that be complacent. They ‘forgot’ to order enough vaccines in time and now they’re paying the price for that.

If their response to the so called first and second wave was so good, why did they not continue with that during this so called third wave? No need for vaccines.

I still believe the country, and much of the region, was spared during the first and second worldwide waves. The figures show that.

This is more like Thailand's first wave.

Just take the deaths of total cases and there you have it

Strange you say that the immigrants are the illegals and should be shot. How did they get in?

You need to take a long hard look at the border controls. Corruption is rife at most border crossings.

Yes they should've come down hard on people smugglers and any corrupt officials helping them. They have emergency powers - just arbitrarily lock them up until the pandemic is over - I don't think anybody would object.

Who is going to do the locking up? There are some very high ranking officials involved in this. They are unlikely to lock up their own.

They had a 12 month period spent slapping themselves on the back and thinking the country was too warm for Covid to have any affect totally deluded which is why it's the basket case we now see, with a total collapse of the economy imminent whilst tourism is opening up in Europe.

Since C19 I take what they say with a pinch of salt. They don't know it all.
