May 25, 200719 yr One quick one here. The 6 second rule. Has that rule been scrapped? I never noticed any in the media about that. But it seems like the keepers now hold the ball for up to 10 seconds sometimes. Anyone? rgds Sailor
May 25, 200719 yr You're right mate, FIFA rules still stipulate that: "The goalie shall not gain an advantage by holding the ball longer than six seconds before placing the ball back into play." I can't remember the last time that I saw a goalkeeper pulled up on that one.

May 27, 200719 yr Author As soon as the keeper bounces the ball the 6 second rule starts again. Really? So he can bounce the ball every 5 seconds, and keep going for rest of the match?

I wondered about this one myself, several times this last season goalies have kept possession for longer than 6 seconds, so I just looked up the FIFA website. The 6 second rule is still there!!! and possession does not end if the goalie bounces the ball. If he releases the ball and then handles it again before anyone else does, he is still in possession. I think the refs need a reminder!

I was going to reply that that's why you usually see an opposing player near the keeper when he is about to kick the ball out of his hands , so if he just kept bouncing the ball the opposing player would kick and most likely score. But billrose seems to have done his homework and the refs just need a reminder .
