Thought about it for a minute when it first came out. I coud only go for the 'soft power' route, though. Classes, medical or dental work, for five years? Ultimately, that can't fly, you'd think. 'Oh, you won't have to deal with an immigration office ever again', 'You wouldn't have to deal with 90-day reporting', 'Just leave before your 180 days is up, come back in and get a fresh 180'. Well, IOs at the airport started doing a 180 on how they were handling the bouncing-back DTV arrivals. Not all, of course, but enough of them to let you know bureaucratic friction was starting to come to a head. Being 'of age' and having a smooth-running stay in the country based on annual extensions--one day a year-- trumped switching to something of the proverbial 'if it sounds too good to be true.... ' (And the online 90-day reporting system, except for about a nine-month stretch in the 'covid era', has been working like a breeze.)
