For a more pleasant experience I would recommend Fortune Town at the Rama IX exit of subway. Third and fourth floors above Lotus have a large number of laptop dealers.

I'd also recommend anywhere except Pantip. Too crowded by far, and not the easiest place to get to. Fortune Town (also known as IT Mall) is right next to a subway station, and has pretty much the same prices and the same products. About the only things that are exclusive to Pantip would be exotic things like overclocker cases and cooling.

On a slightly related note, does anyone know how much Kensington security locks for laptops are in BKK? And the best place to get one?

1. Fortune Town is probably a good place.

2. Know what you want and what you are ACTUALLY getting. (Make sure it is a reputable dealer, and what is advertised is actually what you get, i.e. hard drive size)

3. Be aware that the warrenty offered may be for Thailand only. If you want otherwise, pay extra to get the INTERNATIONAL warrenty.

4. Bargain. You can get a better price. But be sure you know what you want and what it should cost, i.e. reasonable price).

:D

I bought mine at IT City at Zeer Street, on the way to Rangsit. Got the 7% vat form filled in, too. Make sure you get this done on a yellow form! But due to the high Baht, good deals are rare these days :o

The Acer Aspire 3684 at around 20000 baht has a built in webcam and 5 in 1 card reader as well as built in wireless.

Their 3054NWXMi has similar specs for around the same price;

AMD Sempron 3500+ (1.8GHz, 512KB L2 cache)

Bring your haggaling skills to the top floor at Pantip Plazza.

Pantip is probably the only place where they will try to rip you off. Go to Fortune or anywhere else.

Not all shops in Pantip are bad but it sure has the by far highest concentration of rip offs.

I recommend to check acer.co.th for notebook prices first to get an idea of what a machine with certain features should cost.

See here for official Thai price - dealers might give you a bit of a discount esp. since the new Gemstone concept Acers are coming out any day now..

Gemstone IMHO looks far better so if you can wait a week - good idea. All laptop manufacturers are releasing machines with new Satna Rosa chipset right this moment. I saw a few new TravelMates in stores already but for some reason not on the official website. It looks like these will all come standard with at least 1GB thanks to Vista...

As for Acer in general, quality is bad for low end models but service is excellent in Thailand.

Yes, forgot to mention that Santa Rosa models from all manufacturers are coming out this month and next, which means old models will most likely be discounted. Better to wait a bit.

Be aware that buying the lowest model from ANY manufacturer means that you're getting the really bargain basement parts, too. Also, haggling on these lower end models is going to be next to impossible, since the margins on them are very slim indeed.

Hi!

I'll be visiting Bangkok next month and would like to buy a new laptop there. Can someone tell me how much these models cost and where to buy them in the city? If you've used any of this, what can you say about them? I need a laptop with a fast video graphics card for video-conferencing.

^ MSI, your second notebook, have an office in Fortune IT Mall. I'd suggest Fortune, since it's often offering the same things as Pantip, but without the hassle factor.
