BANGKOK (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister has ordered serious action be taken against the spread of fake news, instructing police to proceed to the full extent of the law against violators, while urging the public not be deceived or share fraudulent stories.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, today chaired a meeting of the Online Fake News Prevention, Suppression and Resolution Committee via video conference with Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn also participating. The meeting followed the DPM handing down policy to the Anti-Fake News Center on May 14th, and setting up ministerial fake news suppression centers to enhance operations.

He asked that the centers coordinate with one another in responding to fake news in a timely manner and floated the idea of establishing provincial anti-fake news centers for better coverage. He asserted that prosecutions must be instigated against those who promote fake news to cause harm.

The meeting acknowledged that progress being made is satisfactory and agreed with the need to establish a working group to identify the culprits behind fake news, so that legal action may be swiftly taken.

Gen Prawit called on the DES, police, Anti-Fake News Center and all ministries to stay abreast of the situation, and seriously enforce the law to build public confidence and prevent confusion, warning that citizens could fall victim to deceptive parties. While urging support for the authorities, he suggested better public relations to ensure an umdersanding of correct information, and recommended public participation in fake news suppression.

yes, those watches are from my deceased friend. The government can't control internet and social media. They can't never win this war by trying to censor public opinion

Makes me really angry. The upper caste swims in money. Money millions and billions are there. But that something is donated there? Thai nationalism is popularly preached. Well the PM recently donated a ton of fruit. So 3 kilos of rambutan are 100 baht. 30 kilos is 1000 baht. 300kg is 10,000 baht. So 1000kg is then 40,000 Baht. Great. What really pisses me off is that millions of Thais have lost their jobs during this time and have no income. A pandemic is raging and the ruling class doesn't even open their own wallet generously. Few of them have stolen a lot through dark channels in the past. Now the super-rich should deliver something measurable for the poor. Children cannot go to school, normal workers do not know whether they can pay for their food tomorrow, an old farmer's wife receives 700 baht a month as a pension.

There are really some  fat rinds that thailand doesn't need.

Luckily the knows exactly what to do to cut off a major source of fake news.

Next they'll give bananas, so that poor people know what to do with them...

Seriously, I was at Thonburi hospital today and met a security guard with perfect proper English who studied at Cambridge in engineering while young (!) and couldn't find better opportunities now in his 50s due to Covid. Last week, a bank manager at SCB kept asking my Retired friend where was his work permit while trying to send money to his daughter in Europe. He said, "next time bring your work permit"... to a retired man.

Has the entire country gone mad???
