SEOUL, South Korea — Thailand is moving to enact the Space Activities Act, legislation that would establish a new state body committed to drawing space policies and lay the groundwork for  promoting the country’s space-related economy and technologies.

The Thai Cabinet approved a draft version of the act July 13, according to local reports. For the bill to become law, it has to win endorsement from the Council of State and the Parliament.

“The law would bring benefits to the country in a wide range both economically and socially as a foundation for the country’s ‘New Space Economy,’” said Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation Minister Anek Laothamatas following the approval. “It will also promote cooperation and investment among domestic and overseas parties in the space industry that could benefit the country both economically and socially.”

Oh for heavens, you're in the middle of a pandemic, struggling to get vaccines, hundreds dying, millions losing jobs, houses and lifestyles and you pandering over Space Economies ?

  • In corrupt countries It's all about creating budgets and programs, that is how they operate, budgets give them a reason to release Tax Payer money, once the money is flowing they can then direct it to

  • Are they talking about that void space,  between government officials ears.

Their first exploration into space will be between the ears of those who are there to lead us. Tentative probes so far have found no signs of human intelligence. ????

Thailand has huge swathes of unused space, good to see it will be put to some use, maybe grow spuds or Laothamatas could grow tomatas

I do like Asean now as it provides such humour.

You could not invent this stuff.

I think they are just too far out in space already. Let´s just leave it as is.

In corrupt countries It's all about creating budgets and programs, that is how they operate, budgets give them a reason to release Tax Payer money, once the money is flowing they can then direct it to pockets

Thailand didn't need Subs - but it created a budget

Thailand doesn't need a space program - but it creates a budget

The corruption is fed through budgets

Corrupt goverments  spend a lot of time thinking of things that will create huge budgets.

A lot of these budgets end up with contracts into China were bugets are shall we say somewhat flexible

Then we have a so called  Office of Budget Responsibility run by a government, all a very finely tuned operation with everyone on the roster

We all know that a Thai Space program is ridiculous - it is all about the budget

come to your own conclusions whether Thailand is involved in stuff like this

It's just another employment opportunity for some more of the clan, and will of course come with a budget to be "managed" for those "selected" to o head it up.

I recall the general allegedly told ISSAN farmers to sell their rice on the moon

Just planning the delivery service as Musk, Branson and Bezos told them to "go forth and multiply"

Don't you have anything more important to do, Mr. Anek?

Like, for example, ensuring that all Thais receive adequate, solid schooling beyond the most rudimentary elementary school level.

Or making sure that school education in Thailand is truly free for everybody. The vast majority of parents still have to pay even for the textbooks their children are using!

Or lifting the general quality of the Thai education system so that a bachelor degree earned in the country is no longer equivalent to a high school graduation elsewhere.

Why is Thailand dabbling in space anyway if there already is so much space right here in the country -- mostly between the ears of many politicians and bureaucrats.

Fire work festival is as far into Space as this lot will get

A lot of Thai's i know live in Outer Space already; especially the Politicians, so why waste time with this when there are so many things that actually NEED DOING ?

they have already got the profits from the covid situation in pocket, so it is time to move onto new areas of brown envelope/kickback acquisition.

the baht must flow

With the ministers titles of High Education plus, I'm surprised he did not foresee the adverse and humorous response it would get. But foresight is not part of Thai ministers makeup. He deserves all he gets,????

So they're proposing a Space Activity Department?

That would be SAD.

They have a Dream

Just  look between the ears of  anyone in govt, youll find  it there...........mind the echo though!

"by George! they think they've got it..." See the source image

I just had to rush to the bog before I crapped myself from laughing. ???? Surely these fools can't be serious ?

I do not understand this.

Thailand has already an space agency since year 2000, called GISTDA

Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency.

The agency is owned by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation

Now the budget should be inflated and even more agencies to emerge just to shoot something on the moon in 7 years?

Tax dollars are apparently in abundance.
