Closing Cambodia’s ‘killing fields’ without closure

Featured Replies

The Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia from April 1975 to December 1978, when the most brutal genocide of the Cambodian population took place under its leadership.

Earlier this week, on 16 August 2021, the final hearing in the Khmer Rouge Tribunal began, which is the appeals case of Khieu Samphan. This appeal is critical as it will be one of the final hearings in the Supreme Court of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), also known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. After nearly a period of 15 years, the second significant case in the trials is moving towards a more substantive end, even though it may not really ensure closure for the victims of the Khmer Rouge atrocities that affected a whole generation of Cambodians born prior to 1978.

The Chinese overlords of Cambodia probably admire some of the policies of the Khmer Rouge.  A "Cultural Revolution" is not a bad thing........

Many, formerly in and associated with the Khmer Rouge are alive and well and in the government in Cambodia.

These have been show trials with fall guys. Yes, they deserve punishing but the rot goes far deeper and too many have escaped justice.

I wonder if all Cambodians will be looked down upon to some 40+ years after the Khmer Rouge regime finally ended.

Question arises simply because in i.e. Germany, the WW2 hatchet of the Third Reich is still swung over the third generation of kindergarteners today. If they say anything not befitting the listener's politically correct ear, the reference to Germany's past is thrown immediately into the equation.

Convict the guilty ones and once you close the subject, do not hold the entire nation for generations to come responsible! Nobody ever accused the Chinese who put the Khmer Rouge into the driver's seat after the sneaking away of the almighty United States of Cowards. A repetition of the script could be witnessed a week ago in Kabul .......... nothing learnt!
