Spot on! The sheer meanness displayed by certain posters on this forum is unbelievable. At the very least the authorities concerned should allow people to return home on the conditions that applied when they travelled, within a certain but reasonable time scale; say 14 days maximum.

Assuming the traveller is fully vaccinated (otherwise they can't visit Phuket in Sandbox anyways), they UK puts them under quarantine? What's the purpose of Vaccines then? How dumb is this?

Do you know how many people worldwide haven't seen family members for nearly 2 years? If she was running low on cash maybe she should have considered her options. Should she have flown to a country where case numbers are hitting 20000 a day? Could she have got one of those 300 pound flights that would have got her home but would have taken a bit longer? should  she have travelled in August knowing full well she had a position to start in September. Maybe her dad could sling her some cash to pay for her quarantine.

  No one here is being overly harsh people no longer seem to be held responsible for their decisions nor their actions..Every decision she made in coming here was her own as are the consequences of those decisions. what she chose to do was reckless, senseless and no one else's fault. there were options available which she chose not to pursue. 

  I have travelled here twice to see family members for a few weeks in a country I normally live . I have seen my children for less than 90 days in over 2 years and I'm one of the lucky ones some have not had that opportunity at all.. I have had to pay and do quarantine in Thailand twice Australia three times (plus numerous self isolations), labuan once and kl once every time knowing that I would have to pay for and allow for the time and monetary hardship that would bring. Many people are in similar or worse situations. Do I feel sorry for her? Not one jot.

Insurance normally covers unexpected things like getting sick or having all your money stolen etc. I doubt it covers situations of one's own making.

I do not mean they should always stay home. What I mean is that it´s very stupid to travel during a pandemic. Especially to a country that have an outbreak. They could have been going to some European country for holiday. Poland is quite good and have nice beaches. At this time there is nothing to do in Thailand anyway. Can´t understand why anyone want to travel as a tourist to Thailand right now.

I think it was to visit family that they came, but they should have considered that the situation might change and plan accordingly.

Hard to feel sorry for anybody that came to Thailand for a holiday when it’s no secret the country has failed with its pandemic management! I do question as to why vaccinated people have to go into lengthy isolation upon return to UK???? Why isn’t a negative Covid test plus vaccination good enough? It really gets you thinking about how good these vaccinations really are????

To compare, The rules in Norway are as follows:

If you are fully vaccinated (With a vaccine, or a combination of vaccines that is approved by EMA) and can prove this with a certificate from Norway or another EU country you will not be required to quarantine when returning to Norway. You are also exempt from from negative test before travelling, and are exempt from filling out entryform and testing at the border. 

 

If you have had only one dose of vaccine (exept J&J) you will need a certificate of negative test before travelling, you will have to fill out the entryform, and get tested again at the border. You will have to quarantine at home for 10 days. You can however take a PCR-test after day 3, and if test is negative, you can go out of quarantine. 

 

If you are unvaccinated, you will have to do as if vaccinated with one dose, but you will have to quarantine at a quarantine hotel. After day 3 you can take a PCR-test, and if this test is negative, you can leave the hotel and continue the rest of your quarantine at home. You can take another PCR-test after day 7, and if this test is negative, you can leave quarantine all together. 

 

The price of quarantine hotel in Norway is NOK 500 (£41,77) per night for adults, and NOK 250 (£20,88) for kids aged 10-18. Kids under the age of 10 is free. The price is subsidized by the government. 

Get use to it, this is what to expect for the next several years. The health people who do such things need to start coming up with long term protocols for this virus.

covid worldwide / thailand crisis dates from end march last year, thats 17 months, so whats all this exaggerated “two years” nonsense ? there is no rational sense in leaving your country purely for vacation during a pandemic. thats a poor emotional decision. way too risky & expensive for insufficient net benefit……..combined with family or business visit or running away, such intl. vacation decision does become complex…..and emotional….

 

personally I have not budged from my thai rural home area since mid march last year & nor will I except for suitable work overseas…….I have adopted a indefinite “tour of duty” or “open prison” sentence mentality…..it ends when it ends…..luckily I have a great hill house, pool, gym/ beach / forest access, family, means, etc., keeping occupied, fit & healthy….17 months in such relative idyllic isolation has flown by……rural / idyllic thailand is near perfect for this semi- doomsday type of survival living.

 

my vision of hell though is some old “retired” broke sick expat trapped alone in all this in his tiny rented sky rise condo in some ratty red covid bangkok suburb……but why settle & stay in such place ?

I do not believe for one second, that these young travelers do not have relatives that could help

them out financially. They are just trying for sympathy, and there is none coming.

It’s costly IMHO but I’d say far from extortionate when you take into account that a Travelodge/Premier Inn will normally cost you close to £100/night in most UK cities or close to any UK airport. Add in 3 meals/day (where breakfast alone is about £15 in the above) and all the extra hygiene procedures/testing etc plus transfers and it soon adds up? I have to pay these rates when I have to travel with work so what makes you think that people who have traveled for leisure should be subsidised? It’s inconvenient but quite simple, don’t travel to a country that’s either already on the red list or has a good chance of making it to the red list unless you’re willing to pay these costs?

I tend to agree. For about 3 months, the infection rise in Thailand has been mirrored across the border in Malaysia and both remained on the amber list.  Only after Thailand's daily infection rates start to drop do they get red-listed. Malaysia's are still climbing but they stay amber.

 

Delta is the dominant strain in maybe 90% of countries reporting Covid rates. The whole closed borders concept is redundant. Look at the current surge of infections in under-vaccinated Vietnam fueled by clusters in HCMC. They locked their borders last spring, severely restricted inbound travel and any that did get in served their 14 day in a government facility, not some cushy ASQ digs. Now they are in total lock down, everyone stays home, all businesses closed, no online food ordering or Grab delivery and only the army is allowed to deliver essential food items to communities twice a week.

 

Meanwhile the Australian PM admits that their 'Zero Covid' pandemic management strategy no longer applies. However, NT and WA who claim to be Delta-free want to keep their 14-day quarantines in place for inter-state travelers. They are deluding themselves that their states are delta-free. It's just that nobody's detected it yet because their testing isn't allowed to.

 

New Zealand was already behind the 8-ball when delta kicked the doors in less than 2 weeks ago.

 

VN, AU, WA, NT and NZ all have rubbish vaccination rates too. WA and NT likes to blame it on the federal government prioritizing hoarding for the eastern states. VN's socialist gerontocracy gives them an excuse but these western politicians have all got their heads so deeply where no sun shines right now.

That has already been answered, but to repeat because a negative test only proves uninfected at the time of the test- can become infected after.

The vaccine doesn't stop one becoming infected, and someone from a red zone may have a more virulent variant of covid when arriving in the UK.

Their parents must be proud. Call the police,  the village idiots have gone missing.
