The latest Suan Dusit poll asked 1,510 people from Monday to Thursday last week questions under the umbrella of their needs and hopes in the pandemic.

Top priority from now as specified by 84.12% of respondents was the need for good quality vaccine so that 100% of the people could get a jab.

Just over half those polled cited fair and equitable access to health care.

Asked about hopes that had been realised 67.44% mentioned food and drink packages that had been handed out with 63.64% mentioning help with school fees and educational supplies.

So what was the biggest disappointment?

90.64% cited the dishonest failures of the Thai government in coping with the pandemic, playing politics  and being hopeless in solving corruption issues.

Slightly less felt their views had not been listened to when it came to people in authority and a similar number pointed to inequalities in society.

When asked who was the greatest help in the pandemic 68.39% pointed to their own resilience compared to 53.80% who mentioned their fellow Thais and 46.06% the medical community.

Only 27.96% cited the government as being of any help and 25.04% mentioned the health minister (Anutin Charnvirakul).

Unfortunately, the way they rigged it, that 90.64% even if they voted against them would not remove them !

  • If an elected government performed this badly, there would be a coup.

typical emotional illogical thai poll response. 28% said govt was of “any help”.

no fan but without thai govt. work, might have been zero covid vax here so far……

Well, they'd just point out what I'm going to point out:  It's a stretch to believe a sample size of 1510 people is representative of the nation as a whole.  Personally I don't put much stock in polls.

A few I know refused 'substandard' vaccines. It makes sense, once the government provided them with a vaccine, there's little hope they can get a better one without paying quite a lot of money.... and for the forseeable future, even those are hard to get without passing age and morbidity limitations.

That almost goes quite well together what one hears among the normal Thai citizens.

Glad they mentioned that clown, but 24.04% is way to high for that clown.

That's a fair percentage that would reflect the overall population, I just don't get the corruption part, Big Boss, Joe Ferrari, there innocent and Jo should be acquitted soon, let's not forget, the Junta along with their buddies has a reputation to uphold.

So no election anytime soon then.

I'd like to know where these polls are conducted. In BKK? Litterbox? CR? CM? Isan? In the prisons?   Thonglor?

If a vaccine is only 50% effective, it’s not a vaccine, it’s vitamin C.  Thais know their govt bought lots of sinovac to please the Chinese, not for the good of public health.

Me, my wife, and other fam members are waiting for the call for the vaccine. Health officials came and took a copy of my passport and their ID cards nearly two weeks ago, and were told it should be any day now. My coworkers and others in nearby villages have had theirs.

Her phone's been ringing, and we get anxious each time. Yet the calls have been trying to sell bloody car insurance.

The warehouses of some school districts in America are filled with unused books. They're no longer up to snuff for whatever reason, the curriculum's been changed, whatever. But the important thing is someone got a nice kickback for those orders. It's an old story.

The pandemic has shined the light on this government the problem in general the average Thai have no idea how to go about making the changes their education system and culture has condition them to follow instead of lead.  You remove the old piece what do you replace it with?  do you take another piece from the swamp and put a new name or color to it?????

The efficacy of sinovac seems to differ on various web sites and I even read where it said an AZ first dose followed by a Sinovac as 2nd dose gave a factor of 6x normal protection .

However what is certain is that the cost of a single dose of sinovac is not a constant figure . In Thailand               as little as $4 and the Philippines as much as $38  .  AZ=$10 ,  Pfizer=39 , Moderna $50 ,                       Sputnik v = under $20  . So forgetting corruption if economy is driving vaccine procurement we can understand why sinovac is the preferred Thai vaccine

Thai govt also had a large part in spreading the covid with its non apologetic policies

Well, compared to a 70 million strong population this poll is absolute toast .............. a mere 1'000+ were asked, no demographic, geographic nor educational segregation of those asked ......

Meanwhile, the citizens can use the local made mouthwash, which will be on the market soon to kill the C19.

Bangkok poll, not real without conducting nation wide poll.

Good vaccines is oxymoron and a myth. All vaccines are good and protect you from serious illness and death.

And I wonder how the questions were constructed.

For several years I was a 'thesis coach' at several Thai universities (all were MBA programs presented in full English). After completing their coursework all students had to prepare and present their thesis work including their full questionnaires (had to be presented and approved before any data gathering could commence) research data and research findings.

Many students tried the line 'can I forget the research because I have never learnt how to do research'?

This question always got a total NO response and they were reminded that they were offered and encouraged to take a full course late in their program 'Research Methodology'. Many ignored this course because 'my friend told me it's a boring course'. These students were often allowed to get a copy of the course materials at a heavily discounted fee.

Typically the survey questions submitted for initial approval:

- Were obvious leading questions. This often brought comments like 'yes, but I want to get a specific profile of data to prove my hypothesis'.

(Explaining that data which actually disproves the original hypothesis was acceptable because it still shows that you are capable of conducting professional research, which in reality is one of the main reasons why students have to complete a thesis.)

- Some complained that 'it's not possible to write questions which aren't leading'.

And it took some effort get students away from this approach. A couple of times I refused to allow students to proceed and they complained to the faculty dean that I was not cooperating with their wishes and I was therefore rude. In each case the dean asked me for a copy of the e.mails where I had stopped their work, and the dean then gave his response direct to the student using the same sentences/phrases.

- Some questions were on the side of the actual hypothesis statement, in other words not fully focused on the real subject. Therefore unacceptable in a research survey/data.

Always an issue was:

- The total number of fully completed surveys gathered. (Many times students tried to submit data and findings based on 2 or 3 and even 1 completed survey(s.) When I totally rejected this approach there was always the question 'how many completed/acceptable surveys do I need to gather?

- My answer 'at least 200' and I would then change the subject and wait for each student to start a private conversation, which often produced 'I think I can get 100 but not 200'. I asked for a full explanation and listened, then often accepted the 100 completed/acceptable objective.

That's an odd thing to say, since the government is the root of most of the big corruption issues, lol!

The 90% figure is somewhat heartening. It reflects what I hear talking to Thai friends, family and employees. Most voice concern about the direction of travel of many of the key metrics of governmental competence here.

They talk of an education system which is not fit for purpose and getting worse, something which is confirmed by Thailands fall in world educational standings over the last few decades. They see corruption getting worse, even though it was a key promise of the junta when they seized power that this issue would be addressed. Again this seems to be confirmed by international surveys. They talk about the increasing gap between rich and poor, again something well documented in international reports and not just for Thailand.

However there is also a knowledge that the 10% whose interests this government largely represents and promotes will pull every trick in the book to stay in power. Disenfranchising opposition parties, rigging the political system in their favor, and on and on. Given that most people value a peaceable life and the great difficulty many have just making ends meet, in combination with the pretty compliant nature of many people here, for me it is hard to judge what will happen going forwards.
