BANGKOK (NNT) - Officials in flood-hit provinces are now providing assistance to affected villagers as the situation in many areas has started to improve, while tropical storm Conson now moving west towards Vietnam, poses another threat.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has reported incidents of flooding and flash floods in 21 provinces, affecting some 1,200 households in the northern, northeastern, eastern, and southern regions.

The department said it has coordinated with provincial authorities and related agencies to assist flood-hit villagers, and to conduct damage surveys in order to provide disaster compensation once the situation improves.

Meanwhile, tropical storm Conson now heading west towards the coast of Vietnam is expected to bring more rain to the eastern part of the northeastern region on 13-15 September.

The storm is expected to make landfall in central Vietnam north of Da Nang on Monday, before losing strength creating a depression, then a low pressure system over the Thailand-Laos border around Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, and Yasothon.

DDPM officials are now closely monitoring the weather and precipitation, and have their well-equipped rapid response units on standby in flood-risk areas to provide immediate assistance to disaster victims.

The storm that hit Pattaya area was wicked. The flooding in Jomtien which caused the street collapse

had a ton of rain fall in a short time, and it would have overwhelmed the best prepared place in the

world.  My cousin said that the hole was massive, and it will take a few weeks for the repairs to

get done. That is my favorite place on the beach and I spent many hours there just across the street

from the Jontien Palace Hotel, guess I will have to consider another location along the beach

for a while.
