Another Question For The Married Ladies.

Featured Replies

My soon to be hubby and I have been talking about sin sod recently. He wants his family to pay a lot for me. For show more than anything :o . He says lots of ppl will ask me how much his family paid for me so he wants me to be able to say a lot! We live in a small town. But I of course don't care. His family does not have a lot of money. They are poor compared to my family. My family, as I have mentioned, is coming over for the wedding and we are having a traditional Buddhist wedding. I think we have decided that we will just give his mom our money that she can use for show and then once presented to my mom she will just hand it back to us. I have my ring already so I will just give back for the ceremony....anyway I am wondering if any of your husbands paid sin sod..just curious. :D

I was offered one but as we haven't yet had the buddhist ceremony (we are doing it next year on our 5 year anniversary!) it will be given then. But like you will be only for show & will more than likely be our money used anyway :o

I personally think it is a nice gesture & one you should enjoy, it will be fun too for your family to see a quaint thai tradition that is still in use. :D

Yeah for sure, I'm flattered they are making a big deal about it, and happy that the same traditions are applying to me regardless that I am farang.

Ladies,

This should prove to be a very interesting thread!

On other threads whenever Son Soht is discussed ther's usually two camps.

NEVER,NEVER,NEVER

Yes,Yes, Yes

& some that claim that Sin soht doest really exist anywhere in Thailand except out in the boonies(countryside).

Meme brings a whole new perspective into the equation. A farang lady, I assume marrying, or married to a Thai gent. The grooms family(Thai) paid you the farang or family a Sin Soht

Very interesting, but why not if its the custom!

First husband: no (married in my home country)

Second husband: yes (but it was a theoretical amount and in fact the land we built our house)

*sigh* My husband was too poor to pay for the wedding ring.. married in my home country.

*sigh*

We didn't have a wedding, I couldn't face the 1500 people who would have attended. Too much, too soon :o

No wedding, no sin sot.

However, my father-in-law did give me a 2 baht gold chain after we got married stating that his daughter-in-law wasn't going to go into a marriage without gold.

i provided the rings (jewish israeli thing); anon's family had provided the one baht gold chain a year previously; no official sinsot at the ceremony just the string tying with money so MIL could count it all and announce to all after ceremony; we gave most money back for covering costs; anon gave me a small gold (half baht?) chain for daily wear (not going to wear heavy long chain while milking goats i dont care that his thai sisters wear theirs int eh fields)

forgot to mention of course i was divorced + 3 so dont think they thought my family would expect sinsot anyway (if i was thai for instance)

bina raises a good point, it was always explained to me that sin sot isn't paid for women who have been married before or have children but as we know from other posts on the subject, it depends entirely on the families expectation & also the couple & what they want to do.... but as me & fella have only been married to each other & I have just had HIS child, then his mum still wants to do the sin sot for show thing next year :o
