Golf Situation for golf vacationers in Thailand

Featured Replies

Thailand is moving ahead with the vaccination drive with nearly over 1,000,000 vaccinations per day, so that additional tourist destinations can open to international visitors.

From late September, new COVID daily case counts remain high but has been declining over the last week.

With effect from 22nd September, travellers from India along with another seven countries are now listed as low risk and allowed to travel to Thailand under The Phuket Sandbox.

The Thai government has announced the delay of re-opening five further provinces until November 1st.

Tourism driven Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Cha-am fall into this category. Whilst vaccination rates are gaining speed, the government has set a new target, which will see 50% of the whole population receiving their 1st vaccine by the end of October.

According to leading golf tour operator Golfasian, domestic travel is becoming easier, with no quarantine available to and from red zones for fully vaccinated travellers with a negative PCR test prior to travelling.

Just 7 days

From 16 August 2021, the “Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension” programme offers fully vaccinated international travellers to reduce the mandatory stay in Phuket from 14 to 7 days.

Then after which another 7 nights can be spent in Krabi (Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai, or Railay), Phang-Nga (Khao Lak or Ko Yao), or Surat Thani (Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, or Ko Tao).

Travelers must stay for at least 14 nights on the island before they are allowed to visit other Thai destinations. They can, however, book short stays of less than 14 days in Phuket and return home directly.

Foreign travelers participating in the Phuket sandbox scheme will be allowed to visit other tourist spots after staying seven days in Phuket.

The other tourist spots are Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in Surat Thani; Koh Phi Phi, Koh Ngai, and Railay Bay in Krabi; and Khao Lak, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi in Phangnga.

There are advance plans to open Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Bangkok in October & November under the similar requirements as the Phuket Sandbox.  Final approval for the opening of these destinations is expected to announce soon after approved by the government.

Below are the guidelines on the eligibility:

1. Vaccinated Travelers from low and medium-risk countries. You must stay at least 21 days in one of these countries before arriving to Thailand.  This is based on country or origin and not nationality. Below is the latest list of countries that can travel for the Phuket sandbox:

The general situation is changing daily, however more and more SE Asian resorts are relaxing travel restrictions, as they drive their tourist industries slowly back to normal.

One benefit is the prices offered are very competitive, and of course with so little play, the 18 holes are in tip top condition.

Not my experience recently but mainly because of the very heavy rain which although much needed has caused some issues.

MrsJ and myself, now ‘fully’ vaccinated by several weeks had planned to go ‘somewhere’ and get some golf in.

Now with the floods and very iffee weather forecast really don’t know where/what would be best.

Previously, this time of the year we have done Chiang Mai courses as they are in good condition ready for the high season starting Nov 1.

Seems to be a bit of "pot luck" at the moment. I have no idea re Chiang Mai but certainly Chonburi and Rayong courses are generally very "soggy" at the moment.

I know that Gassan Khuntan course dries very quickly and staying there is ok as well .. but thanks for the heads up. Seems that more rain may hit Thailand around 10th ……

I know its quite boring, but when i am in doubt i always just head Hua Hin way. Quiet in the week with 5-6 decent courses within easy drive, nice hotels to relax at if weather is bad and at least a semi decent beach to stroll along.
