BANGKOK (NNT) - The 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits commenced today (26 Oct) via teleconference, with Thailand’s prime minister calling for ASEAN to open up more to travelers and collaboratively deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 38th ASEAN Summit kicked off this morning (26 Oct), during which Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha and other leaders of ASEAN countries addressed important challenges facing the bloc. Brunei, in its capacity as the ASEAN chair for 2021, gave an opening speech on how member countries have cooperated in handling the spread of COVID-19 and the effects of the pandemic.

Gen. Prayut presented issues he believed needed attention from ASEAN, while calling for lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to be applied toward future challenges. He explained that ASEAN needs to implement initiatives within the ASEAN framework in order to efficiently solve the Covid problem.

Said initiatives include increasing preparedness to handle emerging diseases, reinforcing public health security in the long term, and developing vaccines. The prime minister also urged the bloc to reduce travel restrictions and promote safe travel by means of a certification system for vaccinated travelers. He also cautioned against the use of measures that could become obstructions to the movement of goods.

Thailand’s prime minister also discussed economic developments that are expected to result from the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) deal coming into effect. He said he will push for progress in the ASEAN-Canada FTA negotiation, in addition to adjustments aimed at creating a better balance between the economy and the environment.

Gen. Prayut proposed that ASEAN adopt a ‘green agenda’ to guide regional progress and sustainable economic growth, saying this would fall in line with Thailand’s BCG Model (Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model).

Yes Asean open up, and insist ALL Thai travellers have 2 PCR tests, a days quarantine and worry about being positive, 2 vaccine jabs, health passes, phone trackers, medical certificates, forward flights, insurance..................

An amazing man. All these long, stressful, painful years working tirelessly to save the Thai people…and yet...not a single grey hair on the dear leader's head.

This is the moment the Thai insurance companies have been waiting. The Pm has two choices tell the insurance companies to frack off or get less than 1% of the foreigners arriving as before.

Yes you, you. Open up.. says the man that his country heaps up conditions, repeated costly jabs and unnecessary tests, ban on alcoholic drinks and many entertainment places are still shut and that 94% of his people who were surveyed doesn't really think it's a good idea to let foreigners in...

They will open when they are good and ready... unlike Thailand who are opening up and blatantly not ready.

if he really wanted to champion travel, he would do a decent health application for jabs, tests, medical record and insurance all in one digital place.

If it was wildly adopted in asean, it would spread to all asia and become one of world standards. Just as eu has it's own green pass for several months now.

He would also abandon expensive pcr testing and replace it with cheap and fast atk's.

His message is contradicting his order to crack down on illegal immigrants - just in one day over 400 were arrested at borders. Just in the eve of this very meeting

Sure, why not.

But first we'll require a test market to see how this all might unfold.

Thailand has volunteered.

The others will sit back and observe.

When ASEAN nations (all nations for that matter) start treating Covid like a flu instead of a plague, then travel will reopen.

Continue to report on case/death numbers daily, keep the focus on Covid like it's under a microscope, keep the unending propaganda machine dialed up to a Spinal Tap "11" - and nothing is going to open up.

Until you mentioned it, it really never occurred to me exactly how vain the upper leadership is.  The vast majority of these dinosaurs (guys my age) have Clark Kent / Superman Jet Black hair.

How many of these governments / statistics can we believe??

A large reason why ASEAN and in particular Thailand has failed is that they are entirely export driven.

Here you have the PM depending on other nations to essentially help him out. So my question is what's in it for them?

I believe that this country has had the most ridiculous and stringent rules perhaps of all of the Southeast Asian Nations and yet here we have the government choosy begging other nations for assistance.

Next thing you know he'll be blaming them for Thailand's poor economy.

Why would anyone want to come here?

CoE

2 PCR

Quarantine

Insurance

Not so much for other asean locals but on top of the four+ ridiculous items that I listed a western tourist needs to worry about whether they will even extend them a Visa or not.

Thailand really needs to sit down and do some fast hard thinking and commit to something that amounts to Earth shaking for this nation.

Unfortunately, this government does not have such an ability nor do they wish to take on minions that might tell them what they don't want to hear. So it will just be a downhill slide into a morass of bankruptcies, unemployment and possible political instability.

The airlines have effectively done in High season so the next possibility of an influx of Western tourists is a year from now. Good luck with that Mr Prime Minister

So fed up reading this day in and day out

This is the government that purposefully opted out of that covashield program or whatever it's called.

Willfully deciding unilaterally in the internal government to go it alone.

Now, dictating to the others what is what
