For what it's worth, I generally agree with your assessment of Thailand. The value for money you receive there is very strong. I've started splitting time between Vancouver and Bangkok and try and live equivalently-fun lives in each.

 

Value in Bangkok is way better. Just have to adapt parts of your life/routine to maximize the relative advantages of the location you're in.

I have a classic, vintage Thai apartment in BKK. All teak and marble inside, walled-in, beautiful landscaping, pool, great office staff, walk to everything: ฿8000/month. Moved in in 2010. Owner's son is a good friend now.

 

But that is just for when I'm in BKK. Otherwise I lease a one-bedroom bungalow, a/c, fenced-in, two minutes to an isolated beach by scooter, with few neighbors (mostly rubber trees). All for ฿4000/month. Moved in in 2011 when it was brand new. Updating to my tastes now, and plan on being carried out feet first.

 

$360/month barely paid my Home Owner's fee ($180/month), let alone my property tax ($400/month)......

Dude, you're the one who brought it up. 

I went out last week with 2 other people. We had 8 big bottles of Singha(in plastic cups of course!) and 4 dishes of food. The bill was just under 1000 baht. The place was definitely not fancy, but the food was good and the owner friendly. There is still great value to be had in Thailand. To buy the same in the UK would be 4x the price. Maybe more. 

 

I spoke to my mum and she told me she went out for lunch the other week and commented on how much the prices had gone up since things opened up again. This is in Scotland, so the prices down south must be astronomical now.

 

I'm quite happy where I am. I'm far from rich, but can enjoy a much better quality of life than I could back home.

In 2013 I realised that the UK was going down the toilet. I moved to a small region in the south of Italy where I had a Villa and Olive Groves.

Electric. €20 a month.

Water.  Never had a bill.

Large Beer. €1.50

Pizza. €5.

Prices have remained much the same. I even get the subsidy from the EU for my Olive Groves.

Lets assume for a moment the cost of living would be the same in Thailand and "home". Would you prefer to be "home"?

For me the cold weather, ugly women and all those restrictions back home are reason enough to avoid it. I wouldn't want to live there even if would make a lot more money over there.

My unemployed, unfaithful, unpleasant white wife had plenty of rights though, which I discovered to my cost.

Cost of living ... across the board, exactly the same, then no, I wouldn't have even looked elsewhere to retire, though a different place in the USA than where I was, as bored with it.

 

For me, it's RE Taxes, available healthcare, and cost of.  Get rid of those 2 issues in USA, and ...IF... I can holiday anywhere in the country for same price as Thailand, why would I leave.  Plenty of places to retire back in USA.

 

Weather never an issue, and actually enjoy the change of seasons, along with if wanting warm, live in the south of USA.  Way too big, and if you can't find a place that suits, then it isn't the location that's the problem.

What the OP fails to mention in his comparison is the quality of product and service in the two countries.

 

I've recently spent some time in the uk ( unfortunately ) and the quality of products in supermarkets ( for example ) is no comparison to the junk you find on the shelves here, same for selection. I also found it very reasonably priced in UK.

 

Anything to do with rent / fuel or eating out, yes you'll find expensive. Shopping for food / clothes / electronics etc i found much better in UK than here.

Pre-pandemic my Thai partner & myself were spending our time more or less 50-50 between Perth, Australia and Korat, Thailand. She has a house in Korat; I own an apartment in Perth, so rent was never a factor. 

 

I never noticed any significant difference in our cost of living in Australia or Thailand. Our weekly shopping in supermarkets came to roughly the same (in Thailand we paid more for imported farang foodstuffs; in Australia we paid more for imported Asian foodstuffs) We don't eat much in restaurants in either country, but while eating out in Australia is generally more expensive than Thailand, we soon found good value for money restaurants around Perth. I enjoy my beers but mostly drink at home, and never noticed much, if any, difference between buying beer in Thailand or Perth. Good Aussie wines on the other hand are a fraction of the cost one pays in Thailand.

I generally disagree with a lot of the opinions on here, but it's nevertheless been really interesting learning from the lives you've all lived. Like an interactive window into a world I don't usually get to see.

No customers, and you know this how ?  Or are people to intelligent to spend that much on a rental.

 

Proved you wrong, and that was with search parameters of 50-60k.

Surely you can find much cheaper if actually searching.

 

You can own a nice condo for less than 2 mill, or a really nice one forthe silly price you quote for renting.  Why would you lease an apartment at that silly price ?

 

And why an apartment.  Condos & single houses w/pools can be leased well below the price you quote.

Can you find me a 3 bedroom detached house (good neighbourhood only, (not next door to a crack house) in the UK for 2Mbht?
