Asia's gradual easing of international travel curbs is proving a welcome relief for the region's hard-hit tourism operators slowly opening up to visitors from around the world - with one giant exception.

China, previously the world's largest outbound tourism market, is keeping international air capacity at just 2 per cent of pre-pandemic levels and has yet to relax tight travel restrictions as it sticks to zero tolerance for COVID-19.

That has left a US$255 billion annual spending hole in the global tourism market for operators such as Thailand's Laguna Phuket to try and fill.

Is that any surprise that their country has restricted the majority of them to remain inside the countries borders and spend their money on domestic tourism.  Seems that they also do not want a new ressurgence of cases or to be blamed if cases occur where their countries citizens have travelled to.....as Homer Simpson would say....DOH!

To some extent, the blame for the Covid Pandemic Worldwide, cannot e blamed on the Chinese Tourists.

The Countries that were still allowing the Tourists entry well after the Wuhan Outbreak was reported are more to blame.

They go into an official shop, just to get a free bag to show off and off they go.

How convenient for the CCP which has been trying to stop the hemorraging of all that foreign currency reserves.

Wonder what the TAT will cry about when the debt crisis in Chinese implodes the CCP economy and the world economy as a collateral domino too?  Enjoy lamenting about the big spending Chinese tourist while they still have money.

Given that international travel from China was allowed six full weeks after all domestic travel was halted, that blame lies squarely with the CCP. That said, more and more evidence is indicating that the virus had already arrived in many countries well before the end of 2019, so it is possible that the pandemic could have been unstoppable by any measure.

The TAT never cries. They just pull out the magic calculator and generate new numbers guaranteed to bring happiness to the PM people.

Big spending Chinese? Give me a break! They are cheaper than most back packers on a strict budget.

Would that be the same Mu variant I read a lot about in UK media in early September?

Totally agree. I could not understand why we allowed any international travel after it was clear how infectious it is. I assumed the boffins had said "it's too late already" to the politicians.

Unfortunately that was not the case, the boffins believed the ccp and the who when they said it was not serious even though Wuhan had already been locked down.

At least the world is starting to wake up to how awful the ccp is even if non of the politicians have any balls to say it apart from in Australia and of course Trump (one of the few things I can agree with him).

You are correct, but if the Wuhan outbreak had been reported earlier, instead of the Chinese attempting to cover it up I am pretty sure many countries would have acted earlier. So its not really the Chinese tourist to blame its the CCP?

The ccp doesn’t want them travelling because they know how craap their vaccine is and will have high numbers making them look bad. But in a year of bad news, this is all good. Stay home guys ????

One thing we have learned from this pandemic is that all countries isolating and lock downing have found that immediately they opened, their infections rocketed. Even some with no airlines arriving had explosion of the virus. Fully expect booms in NZ, Aus and China, whilst the rest of the world is learning to live with it

My opinion China will NOT be allowing tourism to Thailand in 2022 - or even 2023 -  for fear of an covid boom in the home country - which they may get and blame on all the Winter Olympic competitors in February ! (course we all know that spouting nonsense of like 1 covid death every 3 months in a billion population is balls)

That coolbox in the foreground of the OP photograph is a matter of great concern; who can say what manner of Covid spreading libations could be concealed within, ready for a wicked and flagrant disregard of the regulations to protect us from the ravages of this foreigners disease.

I do hope that a suitably hazmat suited detachment of our public guardians swooped to examine it, together with several doughty warriors in tight brown shirts, to extract the appropriate serious fines (sorry, cannot give you a receipt)!
