Man charged for killing a 12-year-old girl in Prey Veng over rejection

Prey Veng Provincial Court has charged and jailed the man accused of killing a 12-year-old girl by pushing her head into a pond over sexual rejection. The murder occurred at 10pm on November 6 at a pond in Preah Sdech district’s Preah Sdech commune. The girl’s body was found floating in the pond by villagers at about 3pm on November 7.

 

Prey Veng provincial deputy police chief Lieutenant Colonel Kong Sophal said yesterday that the accused was identified as Yem Sophen, 21, a high school student living in the commune’s Tuol Chrey village. Lt Col Sophal said the girl was a primary school student living in the same village. He added that Sophen was charged with “murder” under Article 199 of the Criminal Code and faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

 

Lt Col Sophal said that police arrested Sophen on Nov 7. He said that a witness saw the girl taking a ride with the accused on the day of the killing. On the night of the victim’s death, at about 10pm on November 6, Sophen persuaded the girl to accompany him to his friend’s birthday party in Tuol Chrey village and that he gave her a ride, according to Lt Col Sophal.
