King Sihamoni requests ‘Bokator’ and ‘Koh Ker’ on the World Heritage List

Featured Replies

King Norodom Sihamoni has asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to include Khmer martial art “Bokator” and archeological site “Koh Ker” on the World Heritage List.

Prince Sisowath Thomico, former secretary for the late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, told Khmer Times yesterday that the King made this request during a meeting with UNESCO’s General Director Audrey Azoulay on Saturday. “UNESCO welcomed the King’s request, but it needed some time to discuss with experts in archeology for they also need to agree to the request before sending us a response,” he said.

Bokator is a Khmer martial art used by Khmer military groups since the Angkorian period. It is one of the oldest martial arts in Cambodia while Koh Ker is an archeological site situated in the northern side of the Kingdom, about 120 kilometres from Siem Reap city. It is a jungle-filled region where about two dozen monuments are visited by tourists.
