An immigration officer was arrested on Monday by the Interior Ministry’s Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Department and Battambang provincial police for allegedly smuggling and hiding 50 weapons at the Cambodian-Thai border in Phnom Proek district.

Lieutenant Colonel Chuon Sothearith of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Department told Khmer Times yesterday that the suspect (whose identity was withheld) works at the Doung International Border Checkpoint in the Cambodia-Thai border and is now detained at the ministry for questioning.

“The suspect hid the weapons in a farm in Phnom Proek district that was seized by the provincial police on November 12,” said Lt Col Lt Sothearith, adding that this case is not related to an earlier one where the police seized more than 50 guns and ammunition from a pond at the Cambodian-Thai border in Kamrieng district last month.
