Legal public casino set for top level government discussions this week

Illegal gambling is endemic in Thailand. From the Hi Lo in villages everywhere in Issaan, often at funeral parties too, to more sophisticated backroom establishments. The excitement is tremendous which just feeds the addiction.  In the villages a sum of money is regularly paid to the local police to ensure they can continue.  These Hi Lo games seem to be either fixed in favour of the " bank" or subject to arguments as to who bet on what, who wins, who loses. In addition there is always someone there willing to lend often large sums to enable a consistently losing player to continue. the accepted rate of " interest" is exorbitant if the player cannot repay, 10% per week the debt is outstanding.  It's a nightmare which has long needed to be stamped out. But it never will be as long as there are willing players and  police who turn a recompensed blind eye.

Hate to brag but I forecast this 2 weeks ago , when Prayuth made the announcement about the " new Thailand " and that Pattaya would be redeveloped to include casinos but what I am not sure about is if the casinos will be limited to Pattaya only at first as it may be a test case with future casinos to be built in Bangkok if the trial is a success . Economy wise it makes a lot of sense as it opens up Thailand to a new type of tourist , especially the Chinese who are well known to enjoy a gamble .  Will not surprise me to see the casinos to be owned and run by the government . Those with property around Pattaya could see a big rise in property values within the next 5 years .

Phuket will become the main "adult " tourist resort

Guess they wanna turn Pattaya into Sihaunkville 2 and just have loads of Chinese come through, gonna be horrible.

Thai's are so ridiculously superstitious they will literally bet the farm after a monk blesses them with good luck for the day.  Or they will dream of some number and go put it all on that number at the roulette wheel.

True story, at my girlfriends village, right at the corner of the main road through the village there is a bunch of banana trees.  A snail i believe left some poo trail that resembled a 1 and a sloppy S.  so i took a paper clip and made the S look more like a 5 so there was 15 written on this Banana Tree trunk.  So the day before the lottery we went around to all the lottery sellers and none had any number 15's as the last 2 digits.  My girlfriend was asking them about it and No joke one of the sellers said some lady bought all the number 15's from her and another seller because she saw the number on a Banana Tree!  End to the story, 15 didn't win

What has a lot of people been thinking . . they want to bring casinos into Thailand and guess where they want it ?
Pattaya will be the casino hub and it’s aimed at the Chinese market . .

While possible, Sihanoukville is perhaps less family friendly than present day Pattaya. Putting this plan at odds with making Pattaya a more mainstream destination. Macao is hardly a top destination for families either.

It would make more sense to locate any casino in a region lacking infrastructure, the speed at which Sihanoukville transformed was insane.

international operators won't be willing to pony up billions of USD to develop an IR if they're not guaranteed attractive tax rates and a clear statement of future competition (eg only 2 licenses and no sub-licenses for 10 years etc). US operators like LVS / Wynn / MGM are faced with losing their concessions in Macau next year; I'm surprised they haven't been lobbying here more actively.

Why on earth would they court foreign investment for this gravy train? They have more than enough wealthy backers in Thailand who will be falling over themselves to get in first. At least if it's restricted to a handful of casinos, to enjoy the fruits of a government sanctioned monopoly.

Not with this PM. He is anti gambling, drinking, porn, smoking and westerners. The country could makes millions if not billions of the Chinese tourists in legalized Casinos.

Thailand could make millions yes, but the billions would flow back to China.  That's how they work.
