Another example of Thai Cowardise...

Sadly inbred from the early age.

seems he well known to the pawn shop owner - not his first rodeo

And the pawn shop owner?

Probably on the police protection book.

So handling stolen goods doesn't get a mention.

Take them away to where though ?

They said they had plans to take them specific places, so the pick-ups came, they put them in the back and away they all went. It was widely reported in Pattaya media just a few weeks ago.

Further than that I can't help you, but rest assured if too many louts or undesirables are seen in the beach front areas of Pattaya they will be forcibly removed again, not a concern or problem for the Thai authorities.

This isn't Kansas, Dorothy.

Highly commendable effort of the force to have caught him within a short time span. That they managed to identify and locate him is indeed a job well done. I hope he is not let off easily with a meek ขอโทษ and a wai.

yes be good to get the follow up to this  does he go to prison ..pay a few people or just a slap on the wrist a few Wai's.. its Thailand any of these scenarios are a possibility eh.. hope the lady is ok

and were they charges with receiving stolen goods ?  Police would be wise to check the entire pawn shop

Some drunk guy selling a 18,000 baht phone for 1,500 reaking of alcohol.

Pawn shop guy only could trace the phone if there was a sim card I believe.

Probably tons of destute selling everything at the moment around Pattaya and beyond.

Pawnbrokers are basically licensed receivers of stolen goods.  After working several years in Oz auditing pawnbrokers and second hand dealers, the vast majority of goods pawned and sold are stolen.

Not sure about Thailand but in Oz the person presenting the goods must produce ID and sign a declaration relating to ownership of the goods.

Pawnbrokers obviously know that most of their goods are stolen, but to prove that is very difficult (need an admission or other evidence proving guilt).

Police forces really need dedicated units who audit shops and check goods.  Many don't and the gravy train of auctioned off stolen property continues everywhere.

Don't be quick to judge the pawnbroker. Thieves have to sell the goods somewhere, pawnbrokers are a logical choice, honest pawnbrokers take the goods then cooperate with the police to identify the individual. They are the ones who lose money on the deal since they usually cannot recoup their money from the thief (because s/he has already spent it). Dishonest pawnbrokers take the goods and tell the police they don't know anything about it. The police will have a good relationship with honest pawnbrokers which is probably how they cracked the case so quickly.

“We found the suspect by scouring local pawn shops and found that her stolen mobile phone had been sold to a mobile phone shop in Pattaya for 1,500 baht. The shop owner said Mr. Bped (duck in Thai) sold it to them.”

In that case in Thailand, has the shop to give back the mobile phone to her owner ? or can they say they dind'nt know it was stolen?
