Thai drivers just can't understand what indicators are for...

Which use of indicators annoys you most? 103 members have voted

  1. 1. Thai drivers just can't understand what indicators are for... some indicate to go around a corner, others fail to indicate when changing lanes, and others indicate left half way through an overtake. And then there's those who put on hazard lights / 4-ways flashers to go straight across an intersections. But which is the most stupid/annoying or amazing?

    • Indicating back left half while sill overtaking another vehicle.. in an attempt to show how 'in control' they are
      11%
      10
    • Indicating to go around a corner, because the road bends
      31%
      28
    • Turing on hazard lights / four-way flashers when going straight on at a junction
      57%

Getting annoyed at other people's driving habits, especially over something as trivial as this, can only end end up harming ones self. Especially when you know full well that the person that is annoying you will, in all likelihood never have had the benefit of a full driving course.

A totally pointless 'survey'.

Nothing to do with other's driving habits.

More about idiotic driving that puts everyone's lives at risk.

Usually not the numbskull who is actually doing the brainless driving.

Driving or riding in Thailand is like dancing with a new partner every time you hit the dance floor.  If you stick rigidly to "your" style it ain't gonna be pretty.

The secret to all good dancers is to be able to predict what your partner is going to do or not going to do, and adapt and capitalize accordingly. (We won't discuss the hypothesis of good dancing relating to horizontal performance in the sleeping room - perhaps in another thread.)

That's how I treat driving on the Thai dancefloor roads.  Ebbs and flows, two-step and a reverse turn, followed by a bit of moonwalking. Expect or at least anticipate their moves.  I can tell from 10 cars back if a clown is about to make a U-turn or change three lanes left to get to the durian stand, indicators or no indicators.

None of the above. I've actually only ever seen the "hazards for going straight" one.

Long, long ago, my UK driving instructor told me that "the only thing an indicator tells you is that it works".

I (mostly) use mine in the same way I would in the UK and treat other user's signals as simply flashing lights. I'm never surprised by what a vehicle does (or doesn't do) relative to the status of the indicators.

Mrs drives me up the wall- constant commentary on how bad all the other drivers are, but it all stops when she tries to park????

It annoys me when they decide to indicate when they are 2 or 3 meters from

the turn,  when I first arrived here , I soon realized  that when a driver flashes

his lights, he's not letting out out , like you used to do in UK , but saying don't

pull out.....

I have used roads in several countries around the world and i can say that Thai drivers are not the worse by far, in fact, i have been driving and riding around Bkk and Thailand for over 30 years now and i don't think that Thai drivers are bad, of course, there's always a room for improvements but even as it is, it's ok...

I think the principle is very easy. Indicators are not necessary to move a vehicle. They are "just" there to inform others. They indicate what a driver plans to do. But which driver in Thailand cares about anything that is not essential? Gas, steering, sometimes braking, who needs anything else? TiT

I love the way the flashing headlights are used here instead of the horn to say "don't even think about it".

I'm considering having the horn button converted to trigger my headlights as it just feels much more therapeutic than waggling the indicator stalk - I tend to break them.

Yup, and it's not just Thailand. It's common to many countries, they are taught to operate the vehicle, they are not taught to drive. So nothing about anticipation or courtesy and certainly no road-sense.

I can't see anything wrong can't ans I must drive like Thais pdo. ????

As a gratuitous Thai-bashing thread it's a pity it couldn't have had a complete head shave!

My favourite is flashing the left signal and turning right

My hate is when someone hogs the right hand lane to use a U turn ahead but fails to indicate his intentions to other cars behind him.

The really great thing about Thai drivers is they don't get out of the car and shoot or stab people who annoy them, unlike some of our wonderful former homelands.

I'd be surprised if many people here do more mileage than me and I'll tell you folks I'm happier with them than I am with the few farangs I see behind the wheel of a car here.

I am afraid it does happen even here.

Here is just a mild example of Thai road rage but if you follow Thai news , shootings do happen also.

Still, if you are going to have it , might as well have a pleasant soundtrack . Also , just out of shot , a vendor has quickly set up a noodle stand. A fun time was had by all.

Sadly you are correct, although road rage shootings aren't particularly common.

Anyway, let's try and stay on-topic which is the use (or non-use) of indicators / turn signals.

This thread is already borderline Thai bashing, let's stay behind that line.

Thank you for that Crossy. This thread has been set up for Thai bashing, which is against the forum rules.

If I set up a similar thread about some of the excesses in our home countries I'm fairly sure it would be closed down straight away, probably as baiting.

Rubbish, sheer common sense tells you to indicate, indication is not to remind the driver what he is doing, it is surprise surprise to warn other road users if your intention, common sense .

I'm always tempted to go to the 4-ways flashers when they are stopped at a red light and ask them what's wrong, what the immediate danger is, what they need assistance with?

But I'm not particularly keen on getting shot in the forehead, so I always pass on that urge.

And being in that right hand lane a couple of km's already and staying there before that U-turn. ????

Any use of indicators shows there's life in the vehicle and you kinda know where you stand........won't be long before we're cussing and experiencing road rage with AI or robots...............certainly an interesting thought.........!!
