Deputy Royal Thai police spokesman Pol Col Krissana Patanacharoen warned that people who steal or use customer data for their own benefit face long jail terms and heavy fines.

Krissana specifically referred to a case in a hospital in Surat Thani in the south of Thailand.

An administrator had stolen data from  more than 10 patients in a case involving loan sharking.

Two separate laws allow for prison terms of five years and fines of 100,000 baht, he said.

Matters such as identity theft, phishing mail and phone scams all fell into this category, reported Daily News
