The Royal Thai Police spokesman has warned the Thai people not to criticize the force.

Or you'll get thrown in jail for a year for defamation, reported Siam Rath

Pol Maj-Gen Yingyot Thepjamnong said that the RTP were doing an absolutely wonderful job solving crime, investigating wrong doing and generally catching the bad guys.

But when they did all this - helping their "phee nong" (Thai brothers and sisters) at every turn - they were facing criticism for all their extremely hard work and spirited self sacrifice.

Much of the bad mouthing came from criminals that were arrested, he noted.

But the increasing prevalence to blame the RTP for everything was spawning copycat behavior.

And this has to stop - period.

He warned people about Article 136 regarding defaming civil servants.

This law means on successful prosecution you can face a year in jail and/or a fine of 2,000 baht.

There have been many prosecutions, said the Maj-Gen.

He urged the Thai public to stop blaming the force for everything and let the RTP get on with their job.

He gave out the 191 and 1599 phone numbers so that the Thai public could help his comrades do their job.

What did they expect?  These criminals were hardly going to have a whip round and buy the police a Christmas hamper were they?

You are forgetting the part were you are public servants - your salaries are paid for by the public - they have every right to demand a highly proffessional service and criticise when they do not get it - putting on your police state show of contempt is not helpful

Get on with your public service and earn respect not try to demand or force it.

That's likely because he could not care less what a bunch of honkey expats have to say as represented above.

The RTP has a reputation which is well deserved (IMO)

The way to improve it is not to arrest critics, but to arrest some of their corrupt officers.

  • Popular Post

They silenced my noisy neighbour for a very reasonable fee. So, yes the "system" works.

  • Popular Post

They have a very poor reputation and are criticised for very obvious reasons. They are generally considered by most to be inept, corrupt and will fleece the public they are supposed to be serving at every opportunity.

Someone should tell this guy that in real life, you get a pat on the back when you deserve it, and bawled out when your performance is poor.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind. Truth hurts. Grow a pair and take it on the chin… falling back onto the safety net of police state commieness is not what real men do. Be different, be a man and tackle the VERY OBVIOUS issues, don’t be a little girl.

Isn't defamation only an offence if what you say is untrue?

Not in Thailand where truth or fact irrelevant to the draconian domestic defamation laws where the only burden is to prove ‘intent’ to defame a person or company whether what is said or written is factual or not.

Thank you for those clear words! Criticism will be punished.

When you have to pay a bribe equal to many years' salary just in order to be allowed to be recruited and the monthly pay is so low that such a bribe makes no financial sense, then even to the simplest child, it is obvious that there is another income available.

From the earliest age, children in Thailand see their police extorting money on the roads, for every "service" and for every "crime" and this is normalised to the point where it is not even talked about but simply accepted. When they are "caught" they are not sacked but rather transferred for a while.

It cannot be ended because you would have to start again and how on earth would you do that when the barrel is full of rotten apples ?

A wonderful job being number two in the world re deaths on the road that hasn't changed in 20 years

Can we mention that in the form of unanimous observation, rather than criticism?
