Joe Ferrari: Admits using plastic bag on drug suspect but "didn't tighten it" - claims video was cut

The man known as Ferrari Joe at the center of an already infamous case in Nakhon Sawan when a drug suspect died in custody after having his head wrapped in plastic has said he didn't intend to kill anyone.

He admitted using a black plastic bag but not tightening it, reported Sanook yesterday.

All he wanted to do, he claimed was frighten the suspect. He also claimed that a video - damning evidence in the eyes of many observers - was tampered with.

Pol Col Thitisan Utthanaphon, former chief of the Muang Nakhon Sawan police station was testifying at the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct cases in Bangkok yesterday.

He is appearing along with six other suspects charged with murder while serving as a policeman.

He stated that on August 4th 2021 the police posed as customers in a sting to arrest Jirapong Thanapat and his wife.

Thitisan said he used a plastic bag to intimidate the suspect back at the police station but he didn't tie it up too tightly.

Video footage of the incident outraged the Thai public, notes ASEAN NOW.

Thitisan was soon arrested and incarcerated as an investigation into how he managed to get to own hundreds of millions of baht's worth of luxury cars began.

He claimed these were legitimately obtained as rewards in drug busts.

This led to his "Ferrari Joe" moniker in the English language press though he is more widely known in Thai as "Chief Joe".

Jirapong - also known as Mawin died after the incident at the police station.

Joe - who appeared in prison clothes -  has further claimed that the video footage was adjusted to frame him.

The next hearings in the case are expected next month and in March.

Sir, you are responsible for the death of this guy, abuse of power and a whole catalogue of other crimes....I suspect you are also a bully and sadist. Such evil demonstrates how absolute power corrupts absolutely...

Also my recollection is not of a single 'black plastic bag'... but multiple ones.....weasel.

Early reports (if my memory serves) were along the lines that the victim had offered B1m to walk, and that Joe was trying to up it to B2m ... so with that kind of money on offer - and just within reach - Joe probably didn't intend to kill him (if indeed intent is an ingredient of what he's been charged with), in which case his guilt is more along the lines of negligence or careless indifference ...

Let's hope the Thai legal system comes through.

Yeah, you're attributing way too much forethought here. The bag fits, so you must convict.

With a dead dealer disposed of, you do realize the money is still available. Next stop is the business partner, wife, family.

Let me introduce you to my little bag.

Others bags for high availability and disaster recovery.

It was also biodegradeable. Case dismissed.

Puleeze...The video we & millions of others saw was not cut we saw till you put the bag on his head & held it tightly around his neck

We saw he even fell over on the chair but you continued to hold tightly

We saw he died before you ever released the bag

Case closed...death penalty...Next

Brake failure m'lord, the bag didn't stop in time....

And another entry into the long, long list of ridiculous Thai excuses.

> "Yes, I pulled a plastic bag over the deceased victim's head, but I didn't tighten it."

> "I didn't kill the fish. I merely took it out of the water, upon which it died by itself."

> "The horrific traffic accident that I caused was not due to me having inferior driving skills but because of brake failure."

> "We didn't stage a coup d'etat because we inherently loathe civilian government, but because we must eradicate widespread corruption and prevent overcharging for lottery tickets"

> "I didn't accumulate my luxury wristwatch collection through graft and corruption, but merely borrowed it from a close friend who has since passed on."

> "I didn't kill the protected black panther. My cook did it and I was hungry."

> "It's alright to appoint a convicted heroin dealer party secretary-general and deputy minister, because the sentence was not passed by a foreign court, thus has no legal bearing in Thailand."

Ah yes but there were multiple police in the room, whom all can claim responsibility for one of the bags and as it is impossible to determine exactly which loosely fixed plastic bag caused this unintentional death of course no charges could or should be laid on any individual.  Clearly.

Defense rests your honour.

The Video being cut ( if it ever was ) is nothing compared to the Air being cut to that Poor Guys Lungs.

There is no scenario where a police officer should ever put a plastic bag over someone's head

Plastic bags now need a WARNING label.

No it didn't, most shrugged their shoulders and said yes, that is the Thai police.

A piece of advice I was given years ago by a wise old Thai man was to expect lies and mistruths in Thailand. He told me that was expected and that part of my job, if I wanted to run a business here, was that it was down to me to find out the truth. If you did your job well, you will uncover the truth and if you do not, well, it was your fault for not looking hard enough. The onus is on the individual to get to the bottom of things. Failure can be costly. Joe Ferrari's response is expected .... let us trust that the truth prevails.

The excuse is in.

Nobody needs to believe it - it just needs to be there.

He will get off - it's a done deal.

Yes, and I'm sure this is the first time the police have tortured anyone. Can't imagine where Joey F. learned such a thing?

Bad apple?

Nope, entire orchard is infected.

You now have to wonder whether this was a “one off” or was it a method he successfully employed previously to accumulate his wealth. I don’t believe for a moment that this was the first time. Perhaps the first time it went so horribly wrong.

I think it outraged everyone who saw the video not just the Thai public

Like to see that written in the police regulations
