I think the 13.4 million kilos is what is know as a "supply chain"

Not some giant conspiracy.

Supply chain for what.. export only as it's frozen?

Thais street vendors only take fresh slaughtered pork direct from the slaughterhouses.

Plus some of the pork has been stored since the last quarter of 2021... so it's not in the supply chain.

I guess all the people shooting their mouth off about 14.000 tons being a "big number" know what the usual stock levels for porks are at this time of the year?

for comparison, the total consumption of pork in France was just a bit over 2.100.000 tons in 2020. France has roughly the same population as Thailand.

14.000 tons therefore seems to be a low number.
that would cover only 2 to 3 days of France's consumption of pork. the French eat about 30 Kg of pork per person per year, the stat for Thailand is about 10 Kg

so these 14.000 tons are 9 days of supply.

there have been outbreaks of african swine fever in the past years and months.

Right, Numbers matter.

As you mentioned, the average consumption of pork per capita in Thailand is around 10 Kg. Multiplied by around 70 million inhabitants, It's around 700,000 tons/year for the whole country. So 14,000 tons is only 2% of the yearly consumption. It's not much, but may have a bit of impact on prices on short term

The street and a fresh market vendors deal with freshly killed port.

Your big box stores like Lotus, Big C, villa, Tops rely on frozen pork for distribution, they supply more of the population than the fresh markets.

So what.

Is that more, or less, or just the right amount?

"rather a large amount".

Can you expand on this thought? Why do you think it's "large"?

In Todays modern World of doing Business, its all about JIT, MinMax and Small Inventory levels, especially if it costs a lot of Money to hold Stock ( as it would for Cold Storage Facilities ).

I understand from a friend that many small pork breeders (2 or 3 pigs) are under contract to sell only to specific buyers. However those buyers are refusing to buy and slaughter pigs keeping the price high and the sellers are not allowed to sell elsewhere. It has been going on for some time now the small farmers are going out of business and refuse to raise any more pigs. This price rise has been deliberately manufactured by cartels.

There are also the issues of ever increasing costs for the Pig Food, and Medications.

All manufactured by large Companies that push the prices high to drown the small Pig breeders.

Exactly my point the small breeders are not allowed to sell at the appropriate point when the pig is ready for slaughter and have to keep feeding and treating it incurring costs which are not recouped at point of sale. I.e. the price of the pig remains the same
