Monk filmed going on his alms round - in a HONDA!

A monk - now determined to actually be a real one - was filmed going on his "binthabat" (alms) rounds in a nice black Honda car.

Complaints reached the Buddhist affairs chief about the somewhat less than holy rounds in the Bangkok suburb of Klong Thawee Wattana.

National Buddhism Office spokesman Sittha Moonhong confirmed that the "phra" was genuine - he's a monk in Phijit in the north east at a temple called Wat Pho Talay.

He said it would be up to a committee there what punishment to mete out.

Meanwhile Daily news quoted the Sangha Council as saying that monks or novices driving cars and motorcycles was a "no-no" as was their applying for driving licences.

Exceptions were the operation of vehicles on Buddhist business inside temples or taking the injured to hospital, for example.

ASEAN NOW notes that monks are supposed to shun worldly possessions - they are permitted to have saffron robes and perhaps a shoulder bag but that's it.

Daily News had a picture of the barefoot monk getting into a car.

And Army is supposed to serve the country. What? It's not serve? Ok run that is.....

Who write these rules..shun worldly possessions?? Is that the reason whole temples are loaded with gold?? Gold paint that is...

No surprise about that!

I'm sure they all do that hiding the car around the corner and walking around to where they receive alms, these are new age monks and one can not expect them to walks many miles from their temples or monasteries right?...

so, you are saying that you are skeptical?

At least it wasn’t a Mercedes’

Aren't all Thai men supposed to be a monk for a year?

Maybe this monk is just a "temp" and hasn't fully committed to the program of austerity, especially when his Honda has AC.

Oh really! Opposite my apartment is a large Buddhist temple teaching complex where most of the monks have smartphones and can be clearly seen using them. In fact just outside, a lady with a stall sells the top-up scratch cards to them, along with soft drinks and crushed ice, over the perimeter wall. (stock photo)
