BANGKOK (NNT) - The Election Commission (EC) has completed the process of setting up constituencies for the next general election and is laying the framework for elections in the future.

 

The EC has recently sent out letters to provincial election offices, informing them that 400 constituencies have been set up in accordance with section 86 of the constitution which was amended last year to accommodate the dual-ballot system. Officials have been instructed to lay the groundwork for future elections that will convert from a single-ballot to a dual-ballot system.

 

The constituencies were established using the latest population figures published in the Royal Gazette on January 18. The Bureau of Registration Administration’s latest update put the population at a total of 66,171,439 people while there will be 400 constituency MPs, which calculates to around 165,428 average population per MP. Bangkok will have the most MP seats per province with 33 constituencies, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, and Ubon Ratchathani.

 

The Central region will have 139 MPs (26 provinces), followed by the Northeast with 132 MPs (20 provinces), the North with 71 MPs (16 provinces), and the South with 58 MPs (14 provinces).

 

It should be noted that the number of MPs and electoral districts is determined by the population in the year before an election. If the current House of Representatives finishes its four-year term, the election will take place in 2023 and will use the population figures for 2022, which the Interior Ministry generally announces in January each year.

If the governing party is chosen by a joint sitting of Parliament and the Senate, then "someone" only needs 76 out of 400 elected members to form a government?

 

Once in, of course, State of Emergency and rule by decree. Subsequent legal moves to disqualify members and disband parties; together with good old fashioned "pork barrel" negotiations should make the numbers more favourable...
