Why "Your clock is ahead" On Chrome, But Firefox OK

Recommended Posts

I've been getting this for years on my XP PC:

 - and have tried everything I could Google to fix it.

My usual work-around is to copy the address of the web page from the address bar in Chrome on the XP PC and paste it into the address bar in Chrome on the Windows 10 PC, which is alongside. (I have a utility called InputDirector which allows me to slide the mouse off the edge of one computer's monitor onto the monitor next to it, while maintaining the "paste" buffer: https://www.inputdirector.com/ )

But today I decided to use Firefox. And there's no problem. I'm posting this from Firefox on the XP PC - something I couldn't do using Chrome.

Can anyone explain?

So you are running XP?

My guess is that your Root Certificates aren't up to date, Firefox maintains it's own

https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2019/02/14/why-does-mozilla-maintain-our-own-root-certificate-store/

OK, thanks for that link. I read it and some of the links within it, and my brain has almost recovered.

I've been using XP for decades on various machines. The one I'm on now I built 10 years ago. I know I must transition to the Windows 10 machine that I built 3 years ago, but it takes time!

I can't remember why I switched from Firefox to Chrome on the XP machine. It was probably because of all these "Your clock is ahead" messages and others like this that stop the web page being displayed:

Maybe those details help explain what is wrong.

You are running an OLD Operating System which starts lacking functionality in a major way.

Sites you connect to have newer encryption methods and because your PC doesn't get updates anymore, your PC is not be able to handle these.

You are lucky that Firefox has it's own Root store, if it didn't you will not be able to browse to sites that have HTTPS.

See Root Certificate store as something that proves that the site you are visiting and has a HTTPS (Secure) connection (that LOCK in the Browser Bar), that the site really is who it claims to be!

It is that simple. The only ways forward is

A- live with the errors (and they will increase in the future)

B- Upgrade to Windows 10/11 or Linux

Oke because you are a Car guy.

(This is a stupid example but you know where I am coming from)

- Suppose your car runs on Diesel

- And your car hasn't been to garage for several years

- Now the manufacturer and the OIL companies have come out with DIESEL++

- For your Car to be able to handle DIESEL++, you have to go into the Garage and let the mechanic tell the Car about DIESEL++

- You don't go to the Garage, so your car can still handle DIESEL but not DIESEL++.

And if you get  DIESEL++ you get errors.

Yeah, I think I prefer the explanation in your previous reply!! ????

I understand the risks and will transition completely to my Windows 10 machine.

(Probably when Windows 11 is all there is!)

Windows 10 support is there for another 4 years ????  And looking how long you are still using XP that could mean NEVER :whistling:

Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until Oct. 14, 2025. (The Windows 10 November 2021 update is now available.) That gives you about four years to prepare as Microsoft slowly moves its billion-plus Windows users to Windows 11.

No it doesn't, an hour maximum. And why not W11 ?

Even Microsoft publish a 'work around' so that ANY PC can run W11.

Yeah oke but NO guarantees that you will get updates in the future! Would you risk it?

2 out my 5pc's can't run Windows 11, but that is not an issue for me because they are only used as Media PC's so they are staying on Windows 10

Upgraded two old PCs to W11, both update successfully, regularly. No problems. Love it.

Bingle it, there are ways around it as I said previously, 'approved' by Microsoft.

"Bingle"?  Hmm, I guess you mean Google it - I hate Bing.

Mind you, I'm beginning to hate Google.

I'll let you know what I find. Maybe I'll "Duck Duck Go" it.
