I suppose it helps that they are outside of the NAS.  From what I read if you use standard hard drives in the NAS the vibration from the spinning discs shorten their life, unless they are specific NAS hard drivers that have been made to handle it.

Got 3 inside my 2x NAS, they've been working for 6+ years.

And weren't new even then.

That has been ASUS's most popular and widely used wifi router in recent years, although it's lately been surpassed by the newer AX line, which has wifi AX instead of wifi AC.

I've used the 86U at home now for several years, and it's been fast and rock-solid. The nice part, among others, is it as a built-in VPN client that allows you to run many commercial VPN services off the router using any of the three following VPN protocols -- PPTP, L2TP or Open VPN.

Unfortunately, their current firmware version doesn't support Wireguard. But I've heard ASUS is working on a firmware update due later this year that is supposed to add Wireguard capability to their router.

Of course, I am not surprised you raised this comment as the technical updates always never stop from time to time. However I appreciate your comment. I found one useful url called https://drivers.softpedia.com/downloadTag/ASUS RT-AC86U Firmware

The change description does not mention about neither AX or AC wifi or WireGuard (or I may have misread earlier). If I am correct, these are more relevant to WAN rather than LAN. LAN will be good enough for file-sharing (any miscellaneous files) for all devices under one router. I hope FTP setting will allow the file explorer to work.

I'm not sure the softpedia site is a reliable source for ASUS router firmware. ASUS has their own website with their latest official firmware updates for each model, including the 86U.

Once you're using the 86U, also, it's own firmware has an automatic update function within the firmware itself that will check for new versions and then automatically download them from Asus. But you have to log-into the router via a web browser to access that, or use ASUS's own Android app for controlling the router.

Just get a Raspberry 4 and install wireguard on there. Then just do a port forward on the Asus to the Raspberry and you can do wireguard!

Edit: Here a great seller on Lazada for Raspberry. (Great service

(ps: not affiliated in anyway)

I didn't know you could torrent with a NAS.  I'll check that out.

Not all of them AFAIK.

But the ones that can do are (just look in the specs for something called "Download Station" or "Download Center")

Synology,

Sorry if I missed it, what brand NAS ? Looking to buy a new and cheapest NAS for kids to watch movies off around the home...

I use Zyxel 'cos they're cheap as chips (3400bht) ... don't ever do a firmware upgrade though (it breaks the Twonky server).

Good afternoon..,in the shortest conclusion, I just bought the Asus RT AC86U router - I am very impressed with ASUSWRT (GUI). The setup to both connect Internet and external harddrive successfully took me about one or two hours & I find quite easy to absorb its ASUSWRT environment. Of course it will take more time gradually to make it more consolidating.

I currently have 3BB cable so I connect my AC86U to 3BB router (modem). For time being, I use "automatic IP" option via AC86U to execute internet successfully & 3BB router using PPPoE.

If I change from "automatic IP" to PPPoE via AC86U, then Internet is disconnected. (I thought PPPoE is more popular, isn't it?)

I have no idea which one is more good practice to use. Will it be safe to use automatic IP option?

Appreciate any suggestions.

P.S. is it possible to convert the media server to file-sharing (ie. including documents/spreadsheets)? If so, I can't seem to find the correct option. Any ideas?

You can let the ASUS router do that, but then you would have to ask your provider (3BB) to put your 3BB router in so called "Bridge Mode". (and also have them to give you the login username and pwd)

If you don't know what you are doing, then IMHO leave it as!

Yes, I already have username & password from 3BB ISP but you are right the bridge mode is over my head. It sounds the bridge mode prevents the conflicting between two routers. Therefore I should try that asap - I need more time to get acquainted with AC86U first. Your links are appreciated with thanks.

Do you have the 3BB HG8145X6???

Then it's under LAN - DHCP Server Configuration!

I notice one DHCP line shows via LAN state but none shows via WAN state.    No idea what is 3BB HG8145X6 but I am still trying to find it at 3BB GUI now....

Under LAN state the line shows as below:

ID MAC IP Hired Time Type

Type is Dynamic.

Does that make sense to you?

Ok, log out and re-log using admin. It works perfectly but the version is still the same - not 3BB HG8145X6. Is this disappointing you?

No the version is not disappointing, no idea what 3BB delivers to their end customers!

With the version comment I just tried to explain where it is (DHCP server) on my 3BB box!

But did you screen change / do you now have more options available to you because that is main thing!!

Oh, I see. I did not notice that change till your message pops up. Yes you are right that there are more features on 3BB GUI.  How nice!...Thanks, I am checking again with DHCP....
