Thai media uses "Hell Drug" tag for marijuana; Anutin's ganja show begins after arrest of granny

Daily News Thai Caption: "Hell Drug" gang

Thai media Daily News harked back to an era when authorities worldwide referred to "Reefer Madness" rather than today when many countries have legalized recreational marijuana.

Today as DMP and health minister Anutin Charnvirakul opens a three day medical ganja extravaganza in the north east the Thai media is still villifying the use of the drug recreationally.

In the caption on their picture and in the body of their story about several busts they said "Hell Drug" Gang.

They seemed to have forgotten this is their usual emotive name for Ya Ba or meth tablets mixed with caffeine, a speed widely sold in Thailand.

And yesterday in other media reports that made national television the authorities actually arrested and held an old granny in jail without bail after ONE marijuana plant was found among other herbs in her garden.

The Daily News story we feature here was the arrest of a man called Bunthom Sornsena, 46, caught in his home province of Mukhdahan at the Kanthorn intersection in Khok Phra sub-district with 600 kilos of marijuana in 14 sacks.

Picture: Daily News

A Mitsubishi was taken into evidence.

This followed two similar sized seizures believed to be part of the same gang in the last few weeks.

It was reported that the gang had "not learned their lesson"

Two were arrested with 615 kilos of ganja at the toll plaza in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani.

The other was a 600 kilo seizure in Bung Kan in a Toyota Innova.

Bung Kan, on the Mekong bordering Laos, is the site of a huge seminar and trade workshop being opened by Anutin today to promote medical weed, hemp and other products that the DPM hopes will give Thais income and prosperity. This was his key election pledge in the Bhumjai Thai manifesto.

But only products with virtually no THC are allowed - that's the drug that makes users high.

THF remains highly illegal and as this report states continues to flood in via a "neighboring country" - that's Laos.

Bunthom was charged with possession with intent to sell and distribute a Class 5 drug in the kingdom without permission.

He will be set for a very long period in Thai jail - joining the other 80% of the inmates in for drug offences out of a prison population of around 300,000.

It appears from this story that the difference between the marijuana easing rhetoric of the government and the reality of the drugs trade is that marijuana is still getting a very bad press, notes ASEAN NOW.

Many will say using the "Hell Drug" moniker comparing it to Ya Ba is misplaced. And locking up an old woman who wanted to ease her pain with a little smoke is just plain ridiculous.

The usual load from Laos is 500 Kg, in 1 Kg bricks. Most busts are for 400 Kg as 100 Kg goes "missing".

Those four LEOs/authorities have an interesting look?

Grandma 70 complained that the police raided 1 marijuana plant and planted it to cure disease. 1 night in prison refusing to bail

BTW when they arrest home gardeners they weight plant with the root-ball and accumulated soil to get the full "weight". So one scraggly plant can easily become 2 Kilos.

The war on drugs is a war against  the people..A recent victim in England  was a 15 year old girl strip searched at her own school, made to remove her sanitary towel and replace it AND made to open  her buttocks. The most corrupting legislation introduced  by so called civilised countries is the anti drug legislation.

It was in the "other" newspaper that 2 neighbours and each had only one plant used for medicinal purposes.

Common sense failure on the RTP part once again.

As I said at the time he announced it - SCARY!

Someone needs to bring some clarity here? But who? And after the insane U-turns and mis-communications with COVID, why am I not surprised that communications about Mary Jane are the same?

Similar to the 3 OAP's (old age pensioners) that got busted for drinking a few beers illegally a few months ago on Koh Samui, who got jailed and fined 30,000 baht. Totally over the top and all that the cop in charge could say was "We have to uphold the law". Needless to say, with  30,000 baht fines, the OAP's were farangs!

Ganga is a very innocent drug. The worst effects on society are a loss of ambition. I used to smoke the best stuff in California. Unbelievably potent hydroponics. I could drive better very, very stoned, than I could after two glasses of wine. So, there is no reason not to make it completely legal for any sort of recreational use. But, despite the circus side show Anutin is participating in, this will not happen. Why? Because it is a huge earner for the RTP franchisees, as they regularly extort upwards of 100,000 baht out of perfectly innocent foreigners, over the use of tiny amounts of ganga. And who knows what they earn from innocent Thai smokers. It is nothing but churlish, corrupt foolishness, and I cannot see them letting go of their lucrative traps. Not gonna happen. Besides, this would represent progress, and this is the land of regression and backwards movement.

I think he took a bit too much THF before starting his work.

what a good ploy : " drug  people to pacify them and swallow any kind of propaganda"

There is nothing to do and no job. People will grow it to sell. Very obvious

As if Thai youth are not screwed up enough.

There aren't enough deaths from DUI.

They close the bars and regulate liquor

They are going to allow people to grow their own and sell it to kids of all ages.

Cigarettes are bad for your health and they want you to stop smoking them

BUT HEY LETS ALL GET STONED.

Going to be interesting to see how high the death rate from Suicide, DUI and stoned ex boyfriends is going to be.

It is one of my pet hates on here that people make posts like the above without even trying to access the facts about the situation!

You talk about death rates, suicide, DUI, stoned exboyfriends, allowing people to grow it and sell it to kids of all ages without even bothering to read the facts, just making a statement in bold print "BUT HEY LETS ALL GET STONED."

I could go on at great length about the absurdities and nonsensical comments you are making, but it would probably be a waste of time, as you are obviously brainwashed by " "MARIJUANA"

I will try to make it simple for you:-

The type of marijuana we are talking about will have as much effect on people's behaviour as a bottle of Ginger Beer would have on an alcoholic!

NOBODY IS GOING TO GET STONED!!!

Sorry, but you are lost in a massive cloud of delusion. Your education level with relation to ganga is zero.

Better to stick with topics you are educated about.

Judging by his post, that's going to narrow the field down considerably. ????

Here is clarification for you, The only plant you can grow once you have registered is Hemp, you can not keep the very low THC flowers buds and must be sold to some government agency, you can keep the leaves and stems which have no 'high'.

Marijuana is a different strain of plant and is illegal to grow as the flower buds have high THC.

No one can legally use it for recreational use. Poor old Nutin is clueless on the difference of these two plants and he should stop using the word Marijuana and restrict his diatribe to Hemp (only good for producing fabric and rope) and keep the word Marijuana out of his blabber.
