Suvarnabhumi International Airport has welcomed more than 10,000 travelers per day after the mandatory RT-PCR test before entering Thailand was canceled since April 1st.

Kittipong Kittikachorn, General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, revealed today, April 6th, that after the Thai government eased preventive measures for international arrival on April 1st, the average number of visitors in Thailand had reached 11,623 people per day which increased by 65.97 percent from March where the number was only at 7,003 visitors per day.

TPN notes, however, that this is a far cry from pre-covid numbers of tourism arrivals which often saw up to roughly 200,000 people on the busier days of Songkran in 2019! In 2019, the Phuket Airport was averaging about 65,400 people a day during Songkran. That number is now just above 2,000. Tourist associations and business owners say that a significant reason for still low arrivals is that Test and Go and Thailand Pass remain huge obstacles for many travelers, especially concerns of testing positive on arrival and being sent to quarantine. Organizations have been pushing across Thailand for months for the Thai Government to completely remove the programs, but Thailand’s Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, has denied these requests so far, saying they plan to do so by June or July if the situation improves, without a firm “set in stone” guarantee.

The average number of international inbound flights also increased to 141 flights per day from 137 in March, accountable for a 2.92 percent increase. The airport GM also said that the number of international travelers entering Thailand would continue to increase.

So the number stands at 5% of the same period in 2019.

Any improvement is going to help a tiny bit. Scrap the test and go, and maybe you will see 2 million "real tourists" a year. For awhile. Thailand. The forgotten land.

Sounds like inflated numbers meant to bolster confidence.

On the other hand potential tourists may see these figures and decide LOS is too crowded already, better go somewhere else.

Mandatory hotel stays of 10,000 beds on the first day could be labelled a clever scam..but of course, it's not:))

So these folks were planning to sleep on the beach otherwise?

Indeed ... and Kitti might also be counting transit passengers and air crew.

So, 10,000 a day in a busy holiday travel period. That's that, a poor 300k a month and 3.6 million a year. Allowing for the first few months of the year ongoing tourism disaster, a fall off after the holiday period and I seriously cannot see Thailand getting to 3 million tourists this year unless they drop this nutcasery imminently

Given some of the photos and videos on social media, this is totally believable.

I'm surprised the whole day 1/sha+ thing is holding up.

I was at BKK 2 April for a few hours awaiting domestic check-in  -- Gotta start somewhere.

Lots of young non-Asian recent arrival types heading to the usual spots. And the Emirates check in was very busy with folks in Islam garb.

Or more likely because a 5th night hotel quarantine with PCR was required and this increase is just the timely affect of removing that hoop?

Roll the dice and pick some numbers.

Is that how they arrive at these numbers?

Hmmm…. Maybe there’s 2 Survanabhumi international airports? One with the real arrival numbers and the one mentioned in this article?

I wonder when this picture was really taken

And the Emirates check in was very busy with folks in Islam garb.   These people are leaving not coming.

Look at the bright side: it easily beats the international arrival at Pyongyang airport.

Many of them could have been Thai citizens now not so worried about their return.

Half the people in that photo appear to be workers dressed in black with armbands who appear to be checking paperwork ! ????

Maybe so -- are you maybe suggesting that once this arrival group is cleared, no others will then show up. I watched this hub bub on the second floor for a while from up on the 4th floor but didn't pay any detailed attention.

There is no day 5!

Get up to date.

You're given an ATK to take away and test yourself. Nobody ever demands or checks the results of that ATK.

Jomtien area of Pattaya where I live, you can certainly see an increase in tourists around the last few days

Uncontrolled growth is never a good thing.  1990 less than 5 million tourists a year in Thailand, 2019 almost 40 million tourists.  700% increase in 20 years, not sustainable, just greedy

Sustainability and less reliance on tourism is better for the country long term

Heathrow has a landing every 90 seconds....based on that it means an average of 10 passengers on each flight into BKK........not bad!

its not about the pre departure tests its the scam of the arrival in Thailand tests thats the problem

A quick count shows ~ 41 int'l wide-body arrivals today so far: 00:01 - 14:15.

With another ~ 27 yet to land.

EK has one A380 on the BKK route.

QR announced they're moving to two (2) A380s on the DOH-BKK sector.

10,000 arrivals, 68* flights, avg. 147, seems believable?

And the photos on FB and Twitter show quite densely-packed crowds in the arrivals area.

*I didn't count ~ 20-ish narrow-body int'l arrivals, or the MUC-NNT "ghost-flight".

Removal of pre-flight PCR had no effect. Changing day 5 from mini-quarantine PCR test to ATK makes a huge difference.

They really need go to ATK only on arrival, but now that summer if quickly approaching arrival numbers are historically low. They've missing out for yet another high season already. Even on ATK on arrival, positives should be MAX of 5 day quarantine; Omicron is completely different that previous variants, however the "science" used has not kept up with current conditions.
