Call center scammers tried to deceive a victim through a video call by using a deepfake of the superintendent of Chonburi Police Station.

On April 5th, a famous Facebook page posted a video of what appeared to be the superintendent of Chonburi Police Station trying to video call a victim in order to ask for money. However, the victim said when she looked closely, the superintendent’s figure looked strangely motionless, and when she asked him to move his mouth, his mouth did move but in an odd, almost comical manner, which alerted the victim to know that it was a scammer trying to use a deepfaking program to deceive her. The video received numerous attention and laughter from internet users.

Following the incident, a local reporter went to the Chonburi Police Station to discover that the police officer in the video was actually the superintendent of the Chonburi Police Station, Nithat Waenpradab. He said that the picture was, in fact, taken long ago when he used to be the Deputy Superintendent of the Pattaya Police Station. The superintendent warned that Thai police do not have a policy of privately phoning or video calling citizens. If anyone gets into a similar situation, they can contact a police station in their area for clarification.

Apparently, the policy they do have is to first abduct and then extort. And when that happens you are in the correct hands.
