Michael, stupid question.    Are you living under a rock or are you new to Thailand?   Thailand, the land of inconsistancies.

What's the current vaccination rate in Thailand including among elderly?

I think it's still not great and also so many started with a "not so good" brand.

Personally I think that may be the main reason Thailand is on a different schedule.

Sure there are inconsistencies and mistakes. That has happened everywhere.

Indeed.  Thailand still hasn't really got everyone caught up with the first round of vaccinations, let alone boosters or second boosters.

Why can't humans think for themselves and maintain a distance from each other without govt having to nanny and police them.

Like most highy vaccinated Western countries, it is time to call it endemic and move on.

The root of the issue is CULTURE

No risk

Quiet paranoia

Fear of losing face

Your post is totally ignoring the hospital and death figures which do not justify the restrictions. Which people are ignoring now anyway as they ignore every other rule imposed upon them.

I would suggest that neither Pinocchio or a nut in charge are regulars on the Golf Course.

The number of currently infected is in the millions (the highest it's ever been). They just aren't eporting anymore. "Back to normal" just means they are not really taking any precautions anymore.

So Thais are ignoring masking rules? Have you walked around Bangkok lately? People have had enough, and I don't blame them if they ignore rules and rip theor masks off. Now just imagine living in China, with their 0 covid policy that will probably never change.

The national government has yielded a great deal of authority to the provincial level, re: COVID. Essentially all of the dirty work, while the regime sits back in Bangkok, holds meetings and issues vague and contradictory decrees.

But as both of the venues mentioned in the Op-Ed are in Chonburi, one has to assume provincial officials are exercising some degree of selective relaxing of social distancing in return for additional fees.

Pattaya Dolphins United, that's a mouthful, ponied up the fee. The golf tournament organizers did not.

You took the words right out of my mouth, brown envelopes...

Better still ask person standing next to you why

Nobody cares. Nobody does it. Nobody has ever done it unless forced to do so. Time to move past all this nonsense. Wish I could "social distance" myself from the incessant bombardment of COVIDIOCY. ????

I agree 100%, but careful now....you may become a social outcast and face one-sided criticism for being a Covid denier ????.  You must acknowledge there are those posters whose opinions are much more superior to yours ????

You'd have to ask the Thai government for an answer on that, but where I live  ( not in LOS ) people have always pretty much ignored the social distancing when it was inconvenient, as in supermarkets.

Yes ,we all like to hug some more than others!!!

Local authorities must base their decisions regarding Covid on the availability of hospital beds and ICU beds. If only 1500 ICU beds are needed for Omicron infections, when the number of daily infections is around 500000 then European countries have no problems while the Thai hospital system will be on its knees. Also, put the road accidents burden into picture...

Now, in Thailand telling the truth bluntly is always seen as a sin...

Local "Authorities" don't give rats toss.

How many Headmen (not Headwomen) have you seen living in average, rather than oppulent homes?

The country is run by Muppets that's why, with their only concern to extend the emergency decree when there is no emergency to suppress freedom of speech against their incompetence.

Considering the brand widely used before boosters, really not good!

If the soldiers opened up the country tomorrow, the protesters will start bombarding Bangkok the following day.

It's a sad state of affairs but Thailand has turned itself into a laughing stock.

Total embarrassment.

Hard for any government to admit it isnt that bad when they have been terrifying the people into believing it is deadly

The question should be "why Thailand is one of the few countries in the world still requiring the so called social distancing"?

Is there any other country in the world wherr news anchors are wearing face muzzles?

As a falang dare to drive your bike without a mask and people will surely take notice. At the same time road-side restaurants and markets chock-full of maskless people have been irrelevant in perception here since covid arrived. Masks till this day haven't been proven effective. The effects of social distancing on the other hand have been scientifically confirmed over and over. Yet many Asians keep ignoring the science.

Same with washing hands. There's nothing against extra hygiene in general but the sars-2 virus doesn't survive on surfaces. Covid is a respiratory disease. Very unlike viruses such as influenza and cold viruses which do transmit via surfaces and make people sick via physical contact. You can pick up the flu form a contaminated doorknob but you need to inhale sars-2 to get covid. A simple fact that just keeps getting lost in the whim of the day on this continent.

Yet here in Thailand not one member of the public was allowed to attend the Honda LPGA Thailand last month or this week’s Asian Tours tournament in Pattaya.

Here's the difference.
Golf is an elitist sport.  The Clean Professional golfers playing at the play-grounds of the rich elite golfers playing for the rich and elite.  Of course they don't want commoners cluttering the grounds.
Football?  It's a spectator sport.  However in the future millionaire professional footballers may not want the commoners around either, but at the moment the stadiums full of people do rake in revenues.

Golf - rich and elite playing  for the rich and elite.  Who wants commoners in the 'gallery?'
Football - still a commoner sport but it may change given time.

It's the other way around, Thai people need somebody tell them what to do. How It's told is different from what Westerners are used to. You drive on the highway with 120, at the next u-turn speed limit is 60. Nobody slows down to 60 nor is anybody expecting you to do so. It's merely a sign to be careful. If you live here learn the ways and stop complaining.

It's not about public health or any other concern - except power; absolute power corrupts absolutely!

Same with no booze on Buddhist days - Thailand is the only country with such a law; apparently the Burmese, Laotian or Cambodian for that matter have a different Lord.
