Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD), in cooperation with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Royal Thai Police and the Land Transport Department launched a clampdown today (Wednesday) on vehicles emitting excessive black exhaust into the environment in Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

An order, issued by the PCD last October and which permits tougher measures to control vehicle emissions, came into effect today.

PCD Director-General Attapol Charoenchansa advised owners to maintain the engines of their vehicles regularly, to make sure that they do not emit excessive exhaust, or face legal action.

555 would be the correct response as, per usual, they will do nothing. However, that response is tempered by the fact that likely dozens of people are dying in this city daily from the effects that the poisonous air has had on their lungs over the years.

It's a criminal failure by the BMA and successive so-called governments. In Goofy's 8 years since the coup, he's done less than nothing.

Must be around the 50th clampdown this decade.. and that's being conservative.

I seem to recall the PM stating a couple of years ago that all polluting vehicles will be taken in off the road and scrapped...

GREAT NEWS! TEST all the red buses, worker carrying trucks for starters, they are TERRIBLE, have to hold my breath so many times when stuck behind them.

Please fix them all!

A while back they had another campaign similar to this and they had posters with phone numbers that you could call to report vehicles that were polluting. We were driving and we saw this truck that was pumping out huge black clouds of smoke and I copied down their license plate and I dialed the number, and handed my phone to my Thai wife and ask her speak to the department. She asked the person who answered the phone what can they do? He ask my wife why are you calling us and she said, well you have phone numbers posted to report polluting vehicles? The guy said well I don't know who I would report it to, and she said well that's not really our issue is it? You're supposed to be monitoring polluting vehicles. He said OK, I'll give me the license plate number and I'll see what I can do. My wife said are you going to do anything? He said, I don't know, I need to look at the regulations first and see who I'm supposed to report it to, and then maybe somebody will do something.

The smoke will die down when the dinosaurs are replaced with young and progressive leaders, who care about the health, welfare and well being of the nation, and the environment. The current crop do not have any initiative, nor any ideas. Dinosaurs are cursed with small brains.

Sadly, this is too true.  Like the "clampdowns" on motorcycles with loud, illegal exhaust pipes.  Announce a clampdown for PR purposes, man a few checkpoints for a few days, then drop it.

Is it so difficult to measure the exhaust during the annual checkup of the car?
If it exceeds the limit, then simply no renewal of the license, car confiscated and send for scrapping.
Like most "clampdowns", indeed, this is another farce.

Can you please stop talking sense here!

You must be new in Thailand, coming up with a simple solution is just not done over here.

We all know there is a way around everything here if you can afford it.

No mention of the economy? Food, shelter and clothing and maybe children's education . Then worry about all the niceties of life.

Sir, you insult dinosaurs.

A slug has more brains than this lot put together.

Yes, but like most girlfriends, this one is different.

4 organisations involved. Gotta be a winner.

Not sure why TAT wasn't mentioned.

Unless the dinosaur's spawn inherit the mantles of power. The gerontocracy hands off to the 50yos and the system self perpetuates.

Asia and indeed the world getting more authoritarian not less.

Enjoy what's left of your freedom while you can.

would love to see them do a crack down on all the unroadworthy cars/trucks/bikes on the road not just the exhaust systems, I have seen pick ups with the sides tied together because they are rusted out and no longer attached to the beds, when they do any turn at all the sides swing out away from the bed. That many unroadworthy vehicles on the road that just makes it all the more dangerous especially combined with the way many thai drivers/riders think/drive, they need to do more than just check exhausts but that would require the police to actually do what they are paid for

But just today. Tomorrow and next week and the rest of the year you can belch out as much black smoke as you want again.

In downtown Bangkok?

It must have been said already but those government, red, Mercedes buses some of the worst offenders.

Were ready for the scrapheap forty years ago.

Could be.

They can't even stop the farms burning off, and that's very visible.

It is all important. And all of it is either being ignored or sabotaged. Clowns. Every last one of the leaders.

Those also but they weren't conversions.  The vast majority of buses in Bangkok have been LPG/NGV-fuelled for years now.

Not much of that goes on in and around Bangkok.
