BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai universities were ranked highly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022, with Mahidol University ranking among the top 50 universities in the performing arts discipline.

Anek Laothamatas, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, stated that education and career consultant Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published the rankings for top universities worldwide based on disciplines. This year, many Thai universities were ranked highly on its list, with Mahidol University ranking 47th out of 50 in the performing arts discipline.

Chulalongkorn University was ranked highly in four disciplines: performing arts, engineering-petroleum, development studies, and social policy and administration. Meanwhile, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang ranked high in the engineering-petroleum category while Kasetsart University was one of the top rankings in the agriculture & forestry category.

According to QS rankings, institutions such as Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, Chiang Mai University, and Thammasat University were ranked for more subjects this year than the previous year. This demonstrates that Thai universities have worked hard to improve their education programs, which leads to global recognition and higher rankings on the QS list.

Performing arts? Really? Never heard of this ranking body before. When I checked this out on internationally recognized sites a few years back, Chulalongkorn was the top ranked university in Thailand.

Never heard of this body.

Only “The Times” Uni Rankings recognized as world class.

“ Performing Arts” is NOT a university discipline.

“ Development Studies” ? Here? A Joke……Outside Medicine, Export, Flight, I see no international standards anywhere. No proper training or workmanship, no Quality or Safety culture, no personal responsibility, no change is possible here from within, it all comes only from outside.

If there is one thing that can be counted upon from this administration, it is the continual dissemination of fake information.

So *Institutional Corruption" qualifies as "performing arts?"

Performing arts ? Sounds like another one of those subjects that students just sign up and attend to as they do not want a job in the real world and to say they got a degree in something rather than anything useful

Now I understand the high ranking.

More of an "art-form"?

No, ancient history these days.

I wouldn't rank any Thai universitys master program higher than any high school in Sweden.

My son goes to school in Thailand and his education seems to be far superior to anything he might have gotten at most any public school in California.

That is  sad statement on Ca. Is he at a particularly good school  in Thailand as there are reports of poor ones too?

They must have misspelled it. I know they rank highly in Defamatory Arts.

Well, yeah, but ...California?  Home of the laziest teachers' union in the world.

Another outing of a Thai minister having the 15 minutes of fame. Next please!

For sure not a public school. You cannot compare expensive international schools in Thailand with public schools in the USA. In any case, students who were taught in international schools don't go on to study in Thai universities. They go on to the US, UK etc.

Interesting? I did a bit of searching (not an exhaustive one mind you), trying to find where this data collecting and compiling institution is based and couldn't find any reference to a specific country or countries.

I'm wary of such pronouncements. Why? Because some western nations set themselves up as loci of and arbiters for higher learning when their educational systems are plainly sorely lacking and therefore have little credibility in assessing how other higher educational systems function and what they produce.

If there had been 1,000 universities on the list, Thailand would have ranked as 997th out of 1,000.

47th place out of 50 isn't really that big a boast!

I believe performing arts and associated subjects are referred to as 'Mickey Mouse' degrees in the UK.
