Not only is this BS, but it is also very obvious BS, as others have already mentioned above.

Sorry to disillusion you, but these shops rely on an unethical sales practice known as "lying." They lie about pretty much everything. Those shirts they told you were "Egyptian cotton"? They're actually Chinese poly-cotton blend. Those mother of pearl buttons they gave you as a free add-on, because you're special? They're plastic.

And the US Presidents? The US Secretaries of State? The UK Prime Ministers?

Well, George H.W. Bush really did pay a visit some decades back, but everything else is a lie -- and again, a pretty obvious one.

Seriously, which of the following do you think is more likely:

1. Multiple leaders of multiple G7 countries are all descending on Thailand's red light district to buy suits from the same mediocre tourist-trap shop, but somehow no one has actually noticed this amazing phenomenon except for the owners of that shop themselves -- and they somehow cannot provide any evidence at all, beyond a wall covered with supposedly "autographed photographs" (because everyone knows US presidents carry around autographed photos to hand out to the stores they visit?).

2. The owners of the shop are lying. All the autographed photographs that line the walls -- Barack Obama, David Cameron, and the others? The shop owners printed out pictures from the internet and signed the pictures themselves. It's a pretty low-risk scam, actually: Barack Obama and David Cameron can hardly call them on the lie, given that Barack Obama and David Cameron have never even heard of (much less visited) the shop in the first place.

Your account of their story is your opinion but not fact. I was here when Bush was here and it made all the news papers here and US. Was even on US tv (think it was 60 mins)and CNN you can Google it. The reporters came over to Thailand to interview the tailors. Same as when President  Reagan was in my neighborhood of Dorchester in Boston  and stopped his calvacade to get a beer at the Erie Pub on Dorchester Ave.

Are you talking about floor covering or a suit to wear?

My post, which is literally directly above yours, says this: "George H.W. Bush really did pay a visit some decades back, but everything else is a lie -- and again, a pretty obvious one. "

Now your "rebuttal" is that ... George H.W. Bush really did pay a visit? And then a change of subject?

No evidence for your earlier claim that "various US Presidents had their suits done at that shop [and] their security detail aka Secret Service men have their suits made there as well"?

You wrote that Bush's visit "made all the news papers here and US. Was even on US tv." So how did visits by Barack Obama, John Kerry, David Cameron, etc. go unnoticed in the internet/smart phone age? And how come George H.W. Bush is the only one of these supposed high-profile customers the shop actually managed to get a picture of?

The Thai/Chinese run shop was good, but are bought out or taken over by Thai Indians now, I remembered the big name ones between Asoke and Nana used to be run Chinese/Thai guy but around 10-15 years ago they turned Indian, Their English and marketing has improved when the Indian took over but so has the price but not so in quality.

Some purely Thai/Chinese shop with their own workshop and staff still survives further down Sukhumvit like around soi 49 or  Ekamai, these have purely Thai clientele and didn't suffer so much when the tourist didn't arrive during the lockdowns.

With the shops that's been affected by the lack of tourist I'd be weary of old fabric stock that's been sitting in the shops for 2-3 years

No  they did not go unoticed but I am not going to search for them for you.  What i meant when I said it was on TV in US and news here is as a  famous dignatory Bush was followed around by reporters/press . Photos were taken of him in different venues  such as the tailor shop and then articles were written in Bangkok, Thai , US papers as well as tv programs of his visit and what he did. There were  news reports in BKK papers ,TV of his visit to shop and there are photos of him taken in the shop with the tailors and also on video/film.  You or another poster said some people mentioned in the vid probably were never in Thailand. Yes they were.  Photo below of Obama when he was here with PM Yingluk Shinawatra. I am done trying to convince you if you want more info you can doyour own searches of  old news reports.

How exactly is a photo of Obama with Yingluck supposed to prove that Obama had a suit made at the shop in question?

Here is what the actual Obama White House says about his visit: "Though his stop to the country lasted for less than one full day, the President visited a Buddhist temple at the Wat Pho monastery, met with Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, held a joint press conference with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and enjoyed a dinner hosted by the prime minister at the Government House in Bangkok."

That's right: he was in the country for less than a day and had a very busy schedule. But you're claiming that in between meeting with the king and dining with the prime minister, he somehow snuck out to a tailor shop  without a single person noticing?

You want bespoke ... then Narin Couture can't be beaten. Paris trained. A couture house for discerning gentlemen.

Just up Sukhumvit Road (opposite side to Nana) just up from Soi 8. Older wooden styled front shop with a couple of single mannequin display windows.

No <deleted> farmed out factory suits (which is what every Indian and most other tailors in BKK sell you) from this Thai Master tailor, no rubbish stitching, real shell buttons on his shirts, no glued carcasses in suit jackets that twist, wrinkle, and warp in his clothing.

A best quality Italian woven fine Merino wool two piece suit will set you back over 1200 AUD but that's less than ⅓ the price for the same quality made and fabric suit in Australia. He can make anything.

Many thanks for the info. I'll check them out when I return.

My post was to the poster that said many of the people mentioned  as having been to Thailand were never here , thus my post. Do not reply as you are  now the first person I have ever put on the Ignor list, congratulations.

remember, tailors want to make a profit. in the uk you can get a decent quality suit off the peg at a reasonable price from several high street retailers. unless i wanted something 'special' i'd buy from somewhere i can try on the actual suit i'm paying for before i pay for it.

You don’t pay for the suit in advance with the Tailors in Bangkok.

But, that is not the issue or point, the issue or point is quality...

Does anyone really think they are going to get a world quality suit from a Tailor in Nana or next to a hotel ???

Is it the same people who think they are getting a world quality sh*g in the same area ?

Is that the suit he had made by Jesse and Victor? Looks like one of his $7,000 Stefano Ricci suits to me. Presumably, he only wears the Jesse and Victor creations for important meetings.

Bush Sr apparently wore Oxxford - $4-7,000 - up to $20,000.

There is no comparison between Stefano Ricci and Oxxford and what is available in Bangkok. Begs the question why someone who could afford those would wear a Bangkok made suit. Oh I know, Jesse and Victor make the same quality for $500.

Again, there are Tailors here who will make you and OK suit at a decent price and it is not a bad option if you can't be fitted OTR, but Bangkok is not comparable with high end European. The reason a Savile Row, Paris or Italian suit looks like it does is because there are things that only Savile Row/they know - some famous Italian and Paris tailors had a forefather who apprenticed there. It's not a one year diploma thing it's 7 years as a tailor, maybe then you move on to being a "striker" (who cuts the fabric according to the pattern made by the "cutter") who translates the measurement to the pattern. Only a handful get to be the cutter.

Glad to hear it, but we all know someone else will be along with the Jesse and Victor make for all the Presidents spiel and to recommend them every time a thread on tailoring is started.

As I have recommended a Tailor here and am casting aspersions on the claim of another,  I should reiterate that I am not involved in the trade here. I am just a satisfied customer of one and a dissatisfied customer of a couple more from before.

Key point: A Bangkok tailor fits you to one of his standard patterns that fit "everybody and nobody" The fit everybody because they have a low armhole and a "sack suit" cut - and for the same reason fit nobody. There are some who claim to cut an individual pattern, and maybe they do.

If you read between the lines of peoples experience in that styleforum thread on Bangkoks "high end" it seems that actually a standard pattern is being used and the "Italian" fabric from a no name "Italian" mill sold at near brand name prices is probably where they made their money.

The additional facet is your shape: IF you are of a standard physique there are plenty of good ‘off the rack suits’ which will fit you

You have obviously never had to outfit a Roadrunner!

The tailor mentioned in these posts does not even make the suits, all the Indian shop fronts use Thai sweatshops to make up the suits, the tailors are cloth sales and middlemen for the Thai sweatshops.

The tailors many are noting (starts with Ra..) did not even make good quality suits 20 years ago at the hey day never mind now. An off the rack suit from the UK high street was better quality, I say this after having bought both.

They do meet a lot of the dignitaries in the photos BUT not at their shops. They are big donors, especially to the US chamber of commerce and when a dignity comes to town theres usually a chamber of commerce dinner/gala and a line-up for a photo gig. I know I have been.

There are good Thai tailors like Dulis, but its 80 grand a suit. My last trip to the UK I bought a beautiful Italian wool suit, probably the highest and best made I have owned - from an outlet mall! Handmade suits in general are not very good IMHO.

They obviously work if you are super tall or super wide.

Thats what it is all about. A handmade suit will fit ! And as you say - not easy at all for all the super wide like me.

And who cares who makes the stitching. All my suits were very satisfying and in NO way convey any inferior feeling. The "salespersons" at the shop did always consult a specialist (the actual tailor obviously) when it came to optimize the fitting. And all that with reasonable cost.

An Italian jacket on the other hand may cost a fortune. I have seen an Armani (I think it was Armani) jacket on its own costing about THB100K on the Bahnhofstrasse Zurich and I recall I have even heard of suits (custom made) in the region of THB700K and above. Price performance comes into play then big time.

On the other hand my wife has just  ordered some Thai traditional costumes at a Thai tailor shop where not a single tourist ever shows up. Blouse and skirt for THB 1'800.-- incl. very nice cloth and laces.

So all in all: Are Thai Tailors worth it ? I would say it is a big Yes if you choose carefully.
