Siam Rath had a picture of a smiling senior policeman handing a war weapon after a crime crackdown in the north east.

His deputies were all "armed" with more modest handguns for the photo shoot to celebrate the successful operation.

Region 4 chief Pol Maj-Gen Phaisan Leusomboon said that his deputies had been busy in 12 provinces protecting the public from gun crime.

The crackdown was from Monday to Wednesday.

A total of 259 arrests were made. One M-16 was confiscated in a drug bust. The chief was brandishing that one.

Twelve unlicensed rifles, 214 unlicenced handguns, 13 handguns licenced but in the wrong hands, 2,111 rounds of ammunition and four explosive devices completed the haul.

HaHa... War weapon.

the article is correct. the M-16 was designed for war use and was first deployed in Vietnam if memory serves.

And what a tragedy it was according a number of accounts that I have read. But non the less, you are right and Thais often refer to such armaments as 'war weapons'.

Aussie media does too. I read an in-depth analysis of the deployment of the M-16 and yes it was initially a disaster. mostly it seems due to corruption within the US Defence system. something to do with taking the AR-15, which was trialled by Green Berets to resounding success, and changing both the design and the ammo. said ammo being manufactured by their cronies and totally unsuitable for the weapon thus causing it to jam.

then they put the boys to work spraying Agent Orange everywhere. glad I wasn't around then.

Correct, perhaps even a million used/lost/sold during the VN conflict. I carried/used one when I was on duty there.

Excellent rifle, fairly powerful, easy to use, few problems, easy to load, easy/quick to fix occasional jam, easy to clean, very light weight but very robust.
