Daily News Thai Caption: 200 baht a night

Daily News reported there was widespread praise for a four star resort owner on Koh Samui in the south of Thailand who has provided rooms for just 200 baht a night to mostly Ukrainians affected by the ongoing war in Europe.

Suphachai Pongchababpha has around 70 Ukrainians staying for the discounted rate at The Kala in Moo 4. Many are continuing to work remotely despite being stranded in Thailand and are availing themselves of sports to keep active and busy.

Maid Wanee Samruam said the tourists were all lovely and easy going and they like fruit. Some locals made a delivery of "kluay nam wa" bananas to help out.

District chief Chayaphol Intharasupha priased the initiative saying that it reflects well on Samui's image. The hotel is working in conjunction with the crisis center already established on the holiday island in Surat Thani.

The tourists are all together meeting daily to discuss the latest developments from their troubled homeland, said the media.

Any act of generosity like this, is gratefully appreciated. And noted. Truly a wonderful gesture. Motives are not important. It is the very act that is noble and wonderful. Good news for a change!

The reality is the Russia Ukraine war is the most globally important war since WW2 and its not even close.

Also to note the speed of Ukrainians becoming refugees dwarfs those other conflicts. Also how many Yemenis were stuck specifically in Thailand when war broke out there?

Most of the world may not care YET about the Russia Ukraine war but they really should.

Good for them.

I agree this is great, Some people have big hearts here in Thailand and the Ukrainian's that are stuck here should have a nice place to stay before they go home and see what Putin's Russia has done to them.

Better to keep rooms full, staff employed and everything ticking over.

Note that some Ukrainians currently out of their country may not have a home to return to, nor private vehicle, commercial support enterprises, health & welfare support, functioning infrastructure or local government, school, family & friend connections, etc, means that remaining in Thailand as long as possible would provide serious relief and keep them out of harm's way.

But how many people from those countries are stranded on Koh Samui?

Kudos to the hotel for their magnificent gesture, and hopefully the resultant publicity will be to their benefit!

So refugees are only worth helping if they look good.

In the context of the OP, how does your opinion of the hotel's rating matter?

No need for the hotel to do that as genuine refugees are provided with accommodation, either by the government or international agencies.

Of course it is a generous gesture of the businessman, I think you should have guessed that my point and criticism is directed at the government and its position with an ASEAN country like Myanmar and the attitude of the Thai forces to forcibly return those who cross the border seeking help. It’s meaning; for these, no hotel, no room, no bed, no food, just a kick to get them out

Not being "cynical": just that banana thing ... Either translate or transliterate - otherwise looks like some Kaballistic script:

Banana water wa?

Alay wa?

Oh, you mentioned small and uber-sweet bananas? Why wouldn't you say that?

Learning Thai by examples?

Yes good to hear, but 6,000 a month is not that 'cheap' in reality. Cheap if "Most are still working remotely'' though.

Could be war there for many years to come. Wars are easy to start, hard to end.

Or maybe you could work on less mocking of those suffering from an illegal invasion of their country who may have lost loved ones and their homes.
