BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Tourism recently elaborated on the performance of Thailand’s tourism sector during the pandemic, noting that its post-pandemic rebound could generate 3 trillion baht in two years.

The remarks were made as part of the government’s explanation at the parliament’s fiscal budget debate, during which the opposition accused the proposed 2023 budget of being inequitable.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the number of international tourists visiting Thailand before the pandemic numbered 39.8 million, contributing to some 3 trillion baht that accounted for 18% of national GDP.

In 2021, Thailand recorded just 430,000 international visitors. The figure from the beginning of this year through May increased to 1.31 million, marking a positive start for 2022.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports now expects the number of international tourists from June through September this year to be around 2.7-3 million, and more than 1 million between October and December 2022.

The ministry has set a total international tourism target for this year at 7-10 million people and expects the nation to reel in 1.15-1.5 trillion baht.

The ministry anticipates that the tourism revenue will touch 2.4 trillion baht next year and the pre-pandemic figure of 3 trillion baht in 2024.

The tourism minister said health and medical tourism remains a strong sell, especially following the prime minister’s visit to Saudi Arabia which attracted more medical tourists from the Middle East.

10 million ? I'm not sure if these people live next door to a brewery, a ganga factory, a glue plant or even a toxic waste dump, but something is altering their sense of reality - daily  !

Why not a million billion trillion baht?  These guys simply cannot shut up about these made up numbers that make them feel important by constantly reporting to media.  Utter idiots.

January - 133,903  ( 3.6% of 2019 same month )

February - 152,954 ( 4.2% of 2019 )

March - 210,836 ( 6.1% of 2019 )

April - 293,350 ( 9.2% of 2019 )

May - 518,957 est. ( 19.1% of 2019 ).  Based on Ministers 1.31m total figure. Seems high compared to the numbers they mentioned in the media a week before month end.

I think they'll do well to hit the lower end their target, just depends when the Chinese are allowed to travel again.

3 trillions, 7 trillions 10 trillions.. those are just numbers dream up by some pencil pushers at the ministry of tourism... no one yet has bought to task of lost a job punting out those wild numbers did they?...

It was part of the current budget debate and approval process ongoing in parliament, not a direct report to the media. It's a vital part of the economy devastated by Covid, expect it to be a hot topic for discussion.

Why is the word "could" always immediately followed by a preposterous and impossible number nowadays?

I am so happy TAT is back with a bang....I was feeling a little concerned as I didnt hear any preposterous numbers for long....Happy to see that are still smoking the same thing.

Uniformity in Stupidity!!

I see TAT is sharing the Kool-Aid with the rest of the tourism department.

Such a vivid imagination.

Yes expectations are high... But restrictions stay ... Dual pricing as we can read today is even worse, entertainment venue is still under many restrictions, mask wearing will not be banned... and rules change day by day... and Thailand think it is the only place on earth where tourists want to go.. Many much better places to go nowadays as many countries are back to normal

Not if you keep up with the mask wearing, the vaping bans, the dual pricing, the ruination of nightlife, the war on fun.

Have they taken into account that air fares have gone through the roof and that many airlines have yet to reopen their flights into Thailand? Not to forget the potential tourists put off by Thailand Pass, compulsory covid insurance, mask-wearing, nightlife restrictions and constant changing of the rules?

They are able to do this because the government pumped hundreds of millions of taxpayers baht into tourist areas at the expense of the non-tourist areas of Thailand.

When will the government gets its money back and not just tax money?

Do the TAT ever explain how they come up with these numbers? What is the basis for their calculation?

Be honest just for once, you couldn't predict what's happening tomorrow let alone in the next two years.

i can understand him he try to keep the job for the next election.

I thought that the only interesting (and valid?) figure there was that tourism had been 18% of GDP.

As that is the just official record .... agencies, visitor sites, hotels etc. one wonders just what that figure would be if all the grey stuff was included. The total amount of baht all those bar girls were not declaring for starters.

30% and more in reality?

Here we go again. Stop it now! What will be , will be , and it will be better WITHOUT Thai PASS!

Why stop at 3 trillion baht? Why not...
