Biden approval rating at 39% amid economic fears; 47% 'strongly disapprove': USA TODAY/Suffolk poll

President Joe Biden said Thursday Americans were "really, really down." He's right about that.

 

A new USA TODAY/Suffolk Poll shows the country in a funk and one that sets a problematic political landscape for Democrats in the November elections that are approaching fast.

 

Only 39% of Americans approve of the job Biden is doing as president. A stunning 47% "strongly" disapprove; just 16% "strongly" approve. Academic studies have shown that presidential approval is one of the most reliable predictors of what happens in midterm elections, and a rating this low would traditionally signal significant losses for the president's party.

Biden says Americans are 'really, really down' over pandemic, gas prices but economy is resilient

 

WASHINGTON – Americans are "really, really down" after two years of a pandemic and amid rising gasoline prices but the economy is in better shape than many think, President Joe Biden said Thursday.

 

In a rare interview with a news organization, Biden told the Associated Press that a recession is not inevitable and there's "zero evidence" that the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package is a main reason prices are high.

Biden said he made it clear that "there was going to be a price to pay" for helping Ukraine, but not acting would have been worse.

 

"You’d see chaos in Europe," Biden said. The Russians might have continued into other countries and China and North Korea could have been emboldened to make their own moves.

I am not a happy person with the state of things, but I am still happier that Biden is in charge and not the previous bafoon.   There isn't much that he can directly do that doesn't involve some sharp curbs on capitalism.   I'd be for that, but I suspect many wouldn't.

Biden has not been impressive. I say that as a democrat. Not a liberal, by any means, but a Dem. In his defense, he did inherit a boatload of problems, from the orange one. And the democratic party is very broken. But, then again so is the GOP. 

 

Hyper inflation is likely to continue for awhile, and the authorities are barely admitting the full extent of inflation. Also, what goes up must come down. The economy has been over heated for quite some time, and within a year, or two, or three, many of us are expecting a historic correction. I would not be surprised to see the Dow drop as low as 5,500, and the housing market to drop by 60%. The current stock market pricing, consumer price increases, and real estate market cannot continue. What is conveniently forgotten, is that this seems like the only time I can remember, up until recently, where we had low interest rates, combined with a historic rise in real estate prices, and consumer prices, to levels never seen before. That was totally unsustainable.

Not to get too political here, but I believe Trump started this hyper inflationary cycle when he declared an insane trade war on China and Huawei, with hardly anything to back him up, other than hollow threats, and sanctions, which only hurt the US economy, and US consumers and businesses. Huawei sensed sanctions coming and went out and cornered the world market on rare earth, chips, motherboards, circuit boards, and other materials. Companies started ramping down production due to Covid. When they started to order these elements and parts, none were to be found or the price had skyrocketed. It started a massive supply chain issue with cell phone, computer and automotive components. Then the shipping issues came later. And inflation began skyrocketing.

Few want to look back at where this started. At the time I said it was the single dumbest thing a politician had done since Chamberlain denied the bad intentions of the Nazis. Trump created hyper inflation, singlehandedly. Thanks, Don.

I certainly agree that gas prices in the USA are cheaper than many countries, especially in Europe. I was comparing the gas prices in the USA today with what they were 12 month ago! A 55% increase!

Unfair comparison—the US had a vibrant oil industry and much cheaper gasoline on the day Biden took office.  Other countries, especially in Central Europe, have always had high gasoline prices.

Trump's 2.5 billion dollar tax cut for the rich which mainly found its way into share buybacks and overseas tax havens had nothing to do with inflation which surged soon afterwards. </sarc>.

 

Additional causes were covid stimulus going to the rich and companies which didn't need it, supply chain disruptions due to covid and Russia's attack on Ukraine. None of this can be sheeted home to Biden. It's also an economic maxim that changes in the economy lag policy by 18 months.

Ya think Biden's a wildcatter? Not exactly in his job description

The oil and gas companies hold lots of leases that they haven't exploited it. It wasn't so long ago that prices were really low particularly for gas. Not exactly an encouraging environment to drill.

And what he is pushing for, unlike his predecessor, is to get off of fossil fuels once and for all. So the USA won't be dependent on the stuff anymore.

The gas prices were rising as the Russian buildup occurred. If they are anything at all to do with Biden why are they rising world wide? The suggestion that they are is "malarkey".

It's the typical response of politics.  For 8 years under Obama, everything bad was Bush's fault.  After Trump took office, all good things was because of what Obama left him.  Now, under Biden, everything is Trump's fault.  But according to Biden's press secretary, the US economy is in great shape ????

Trump entirely right to try to decrease the disastrous trade dependency on China. Hopefully other Western leaders will do the same, but don't bank on it.

You get an A for effort.  Inflation (including gas prices) in US began far before Putin’s buildup along the Ukraine border.  Retired Americans with Social Security got a 5.9% raise in January—based on 3rd quarter inflation indexes.

Because America is not producing nearly enough because of the Dems. green policies. So America is taking more than 1 million barrels of oil a day away from other countries. The Dems. know all of this but they just can't open their eyes, nor do they want to.

The steep0est rises in oil only started at the end of February this year.
