It is not only legal, it is advisable. In fact, it is a very effective way for making them follow the law.

Stay under the radar mate, enjoy your time in Thailand, you don't want to end up in the Bangkok Hilton.

If you're prone to getting in trouble with the law, Thailand is probably not the place for you.

I was with some Thai friends (all BiB),

OMG, Now I know what's wrong with you. ????

I have a dashcam in my car so film the police at check points on a regular basis and have never had a problem in several years.

IMO, If you're a rich, well connected Thai you can probably get away with it, anybody other than that, not advisable.

as a former interpol agent worked in thailand and know many thai police, also currently working with the royal thai airforce  i say that you CAN record any police activity from a safe distance not disturbing the police on duty.

when you are recording;

*you cannot get involved with the investigation..

*you cannot disturb the police officer or get into his investigation or personal space...

*you cannot get involve to the case if you are not related to..

*you can do the things you cannot do only with his permission..

if the case is about you yes, you CAN record.

*you can record only the case and related to it.

PS: there are many things about this which i cannot write here because its lot of details but the info i gave you is the main idea

and yes, the biggest police in my city literary sitting next to me and reading this and drinking our beer and talking about our together old days working together in interpol

If one ever get into an unwanted confrontation with police officers, is it legal to film them to protect oneself from potential wrong-doing of the police?

Confrontation over what? A 200-400-600b traffic fine?  Is it really worth the potential trouble?

Agree.

Some people amaze with with their obsession to expose themselves to unecessary hardship.

Little things like you mentioned, they're ready to react in an aggressive way, shoving a camera in another person's face to protect their rights, it's attention seeking.

Who would want to be a cop, having to deal with these crazy people daily.

I'm the guy that prefers to stay under the radar. Especially in Thailand, there are different laws, cultures, a little bit of corruption money etc., if that's what it takes or what I must pay, this minor inconvenience, to put up with to live in this beautiful country so be it.

I reckon if the OP wants to start recording the cops for different issues, Thailand is probably not the place for him.

I see quite a few videos of people filming the cops on the internet, what do people see in antagonizing a cop, are they getting enjoyment, maybe getting sexual pleasure, there are some strange people in this world.

Sadly too many of these strange types are coming to Thailand.

'Copwatch' app records direct to their servers so a record is in public domain. I think it can even be setup to download to Youtube at a later time if your not around for some reason.
