Thais set to pay record five baht a unit in new electricity charges from September

Daily News Thai Caption: Electricity set to cost 5 baht/unit

Daily News reported that the cost of electricity was set to break through the 5 baht a unit barrier for the first time.

Electrical authorities pointed to the high cost of gas used to generate electricity.

They quoted sources at the Energy Regulatory Commission as saying that the FT rate was possibly about to change from September to December meaning that the rate per unit would border on 5 baht in the last four months of the year.

The FT rate - that is used to calculate charges - will be announced for the end of the year at the end of July.

The main problem is the rising cost of imported gas used to supplement natural gas extracted from the Gulf of Thailand.

I haven't looked at the bill in a while but isn't 5 baht already about average?

My last invoice was 4.73 THB per unit for 750 kwh and FT charges and taxes This is a PEA invoice. I never figure just the KWH costs only.

The Thai public will look like current Sri Lanka before the utility companies and gas stations raise their prices so high that the common-folk revolt.
I can absorb it.

What is really happening is that the corporate elites have found another way to invoke predatory wealth transfers by imposing austerity on commoners and absorbing the new excess revenue and profits.

Not far off. I think around 4.5 THB per unit is the average for me. So can expect a 10-15% increase. Not the end of the world

Depends on whose charging you, if it is PEA or MEA its been running me about 4.4 per unit charged by MEA here in BKK. So about a half a baht jump, or 2 Satang more.

They impose a carbon tax in Canada as we speak.Have been doing so for a couple years now.It affects the cost of living big time. That is a very expensive place to live.

Another blow to those struggling at the foot of the ladder, no compassion coming from the Muppets in charge as usual because they don't give a **** about ordinary people.

No schemes to help them but plenty of dosh for submarines with no engines and time to allow foreign aircraft to fly into Thai airspace to bomb civilians.

Disgraceful.

That's really not good but I guess it's happening all around the world unfortunately. It's just tougher for people to absorb in countries such as here where most are already struggling to keep things afloat or just survive..

Energy costs are becoming a burden on average Thai incomes .

Products such as air conditioners, pick up trucks will become unwanted purchases.

Looking grim for businesses in Thailand as we have known it

Electricity going up 20-30% in Australia from 1 July. No different as effects of Russia stupidity

Australia it's about 8 to 9 BAHT per kWh and they have their own gas and coal figure that out.     and everyone has air conditioning or heating

To pay for additional military hardware for the Burmese junta?? Thailand imports Burmese gas from the Andaman Sea from PTT operated rigs.

Try dividing the TOTAL COST by the number of units to give you a true cost per unit.

I give you 20,000 Satang, you give me 10,000 Baht.

Are they talking about 5 baht for the maximum price per unit(over 400kwh)  or 5 baht for the minimum price per unit (under 150kwh)?

Price in Germany almost triple of the price here.

Gas prices exploding.

How is the US sanctioning Russia (whilst buying Russian sold gas from India at a premium) and forcing EU countries to do the same the effects of Russia's stupidity?

Maximum.

They will fiddle with the "Ft" (fuel price surcharge) but the progressive scale will not be changed.

0 - 149 units

150 - 399 units

400 and above

Only the latter will peak over 5 Baht.

So what ? I doubt that the poorer folk in Thailand who are already struggling give a toss what they pay in other countries as it is totally irrelevant to the energy cost burden that they face here in Thailand.

More pain for those at the bottom of the ladder.

I wonder how many apartment owners will use this as an excuse to increase the rate by more than the electric companies increase it by?

Who mentioned the US? I stated a fact that all Australians were advised of a 20-30% increase in Electricity bills from 1 July due to Russia invading Ukraine, an unprovoked Russian stupidity

The poorest get 50 units for free.

And believe it or, many don't climb above.

The rest of your babble is for the bin.

The first 50 units are free, use 55 you pay for all of it. Stop your absolute rubbish as clearly you are ignorant of the facts.  Many folks in my village are poor and their main procession is a fridge which takes them over the 50 unit/month. So what do you suggest, they turn off their fridge and endure further hardship ? Get a life and see what the reality is in Thailand, not your own cotton wool world of ignorance.

Worry, rationing is likely to happen throughout Europe next Winter. The Thai rulers might use this as an excuse.

One thing is sure I cannot live in Thailand without aircon, could someone size a solar system that matches a 9k to 10k PEA monthly bill? Batteries for the night included...
