Star gets an earful

Whatever your views, somewhere someone's getting hot under the collar about them. Hollywood stars are always expressing their political views, but celebrities here pay a high cost for voicing theirs.

Movie star Sornram Theppitak is the latest to encounter trouble from those who disagree with his political viewpoint.

People's Alliance for Democracy supporters have heckled him during a show at a Singburi department store. Sornram was at the store promoting a new product this past Saturday. As he was leaving he was reportedly shouted at abusively by five suspected PAD supporters. They also shouted offensive remarks about Thaksin Shinawatra.

The incident happened near the parking area where he and his crew had left their equipment vehicles. Later that evening he was verbally abused while eating at a restaurant.

His personal assistant Sukannaya Intasuwan denies the incident at the department store took place. She admits some people - they may have been PAD protesters - spoke harshly to Sornram at the restaurant.

Sornram earlier criticised the PAD protest and some celebrities who have joined it when he was being interviewed. He accuses them of making trouble for the country.

Noom was on TV last night in a highly publicised event where he went to see the dead ladies husband & make a very long and emotional apology.

If I had to make that kind of apology then I would not want it to be highly publicised. Not everything needs to be done in front of the TV cameras.

Movie Star Sornram Apologizing for Criticizing PAD Supporters

After a week of avoiding the media, famous Thai movie star Sornram Theppitak has apologized for criticizing supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy.

The local heartthrob says he never thought his comment would enrage so many people.

Unlike Hollywood, where movie stars often express their political views, Thai celebrities tend to stay well away from the subject matter. However, Thai actor Sornram Theppitak decidedly ignored the tradition and commented on the ongoing rally by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

Last Thursday Sornram lashed out at reporters for saying someone saw him participating in the PAD rally. Sornram responded by asking the reporters about the identity of their source. When asked what he thought about other celebrities who have taken the PAD stage, he said those individuals and the rally-goers are troublemakers.

To be more specific, Sornram said the PAD rally-goers are making trouble for His Majesty the King. Sornram told the press he did not join the PAD rally because he did not want His Majesty the King to have any sleepless nights.

This has enraged both the PAD supporters and the Thai singers and actors who have joined the PAD stage activities. PAD supporters managed to embarrass Sornram after hearing the actor would show up at Singburi. The group shouted abuse at him in public.

Since late last week, Sornram has been avoiding both the public and the media. In his latest interview today, Sornram apologized to the public for his comments. He said he merely expressed his personal belief and did not intend to provoke this kind of reaction. Sornram adds he's willing to take responsibility for his statements.

He vowed not to make comments about the issue again in the future.

People here are such sheep. They just can't have a civil discussion--everyone must agree, there cannot be an dissention. Sad, really.
