Monkeypox: Thais advised to avoid sexual contact with foreigners, hotels advised to clean properly

A member of the Medical Council of Thailand has advised Thais to avoid sexual contact with foreign nationals to help contain the spread of monkeypox.

He even warned there could be deaths among people with other serious health issues if they became infected.

This comes despite the fact that the disease can't be transmitted via sexual contact.

Though information available online says that monkeypox spreads through close skin-to-skin physical contact with infected individuals such as when having sex or contamination with such items as bedding, towels or clothes, said the NSW government health department in Australia.

Council member Amon Leelarasami said that Thais could become infected from the virus because of secretions from blisters on the body.

Most cases worldwide so far are among gay and bisexual men according to aidsmap.com while the World Health Organisation has warned that men who have sex with men are the group at the highest risk of infection right now.

WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus has said that such men should consider limiting their sexual partners to lower risks and contain spread.

He called for authorities and governments to fight stigma in comments to CNBC last week but the statements from Amon are unlikely to do that, notes ASEAN NOW.

Amon said he was uncertain whether monkeypox would become endemic in Thailand. The council itself contains no such warning about limiting sexual contact with foreigners according to their online page.

But Amon was clearly worried. He said that the disease could get out of control if it spreads in monkeys, rabbits and rats.

And there could even be deaths if human patients have underlying conditions like cancer or immune deficiency problems, he warned in comments to English print media.

He said that people who develop fever, blisters and a red rash should take a monkeypox test immediately and isolate for three weeks.

He also called for hotel operators to clean rooms in line with international standards to contain the spread.

More than 20,000 cases have been found around the world with more than 5,000 in the US, he said, adding that the virus had been found in all but three US states.

I'm sure they meant with foreign tourists.

How about a link to the original in Thai, maybe a mistranslation.

Let's not attack the alleged culprit so soon.

True, it could be spread by gay Thai men returning from abroad.

Nobody said is was an STD but by far the majority of cases throughout the world in this new wave have been in gay men.

Perhaps we should all just have sex with monkeys.

That would put Amon back in his monkey-box.

I assume the TAT is not going to use this as an incentive to visit Thailand?

I read AIDS was bought here by marines. Whatever the case the policy of advising to avoid being close to foreigners led AIDS exploding because it was already spreading thru cheap brothels in the north. Seems they haven't learned.

I'm sure they mean, to prevent foreigners getting infected, because the Thais are infected already.

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/nigerian-may-have-been-infected-with-monkeypox-in-thailand-senior-doctor/

The Nigerian man, who was confirmed to be Thailand’s first and so far only monkeypox case, may have contracted the virus in the country, said Dr. Wasun Chantratita, chief of the Centre for Medical Genomics at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Are you trying to say the OP is Thai bashing and its the Forum that is at fault?  I don't understand, is the statement quoted below Xenophobic or not?  Why blame just foreigners, this is how the Covid issue first played out and how all foreigners were given a wide birth because they carried Covid, but Thai's were clean....do you remember that.  Was not because of the forum.

I'd save your breath; some on here are so mawkishly Thaier than Thai--even when totally warranted with xenophobic comments against foreigners--it's unbearable. Just put on ignore.

This warning comes from a member of the Medical Counsel? Guess he/she got the position thanks to family and friends and not qualifications or competence.

What we love about Thailand is also what we hate about Thailand.

People are innocent and direct almost naive....  but then we encounter public statements such as this which could be construed as ‘innocent, direct and naive’... but coming from a public figure the statement is instead ‘xenophobic and clumsy’....   but, its not wholly inaccurate.

Perhaps a better statement would have been 'All people in Thailand are advised to be careful with whom them make physical contact’.....

Again, the innocent, direct, naive, clumsiness.... Does this imply hotels are not normally cleaned to international standards ???

A recognition that international standards are somehow better than Thai cleaning standards ?

'GDP forecast to drop, cause foreigners have Monkeypox and Covid, and cannot travel to Thailand. Foreigners were asked to just send their money, but they refused... Thailand's GDP down. Curse them!'

But doesn't that advice imply that there's prostitution in Thailand, which we all know to be untrue and merely a nasty slur on the country by Dark Forces?

Those damn foreigners again...!!! They get bl00dy everywhere!
