Any nice day trips outside of Bangkok?

Featured Replies

Are there any nice day trips outside of Bangkok with nice roads and scenery? I usually just pick some nice looking temple on the map but I was wondering if there are any nice routes that are well known and recommended.

Mostly urban sprawl.

Wat Lam Phaya is a nice short ride. Get there early and if you are coming from South end of BKK, take Ratchapruek / Kanchanapriesek road to get you to the west then choose as many back roads west of kanchanapriesek as soon as you cross over to Nonthaburi. Plenty of food on floating stalls there. Venture further north / north west from there up to Suphan if you like. Stay near the rivers/ canals to find interesting things.

You could also slab it out of town on the 305 to Khao Yai national park. The 3481 will give you a more liesurely ride and meander your way to Khao Yai via roads off the 3079. Again, the trick is to leave early.

Also West, you can nip through Ratburi to Suan Phung on the 3208 and then hook onto the 4020 or the 4019 and explore off them.

Leaving BKK in the first hour of light before the sun actually comes up will get you out of the snarl before the roads clog up.

Thanks! Will check it out. Yeah I'd like to get out before 5-6 am. My friend wants to leave at 10 am at the earliest. In other words better to go by myself ????

Kao Yai national park is an easy day trip.

Many riders seem to view Kao Yai as some sort of race track but I would advise against that as there are many potential hazards.  You will almost certainly encounter monkeys but it could be something much larger like an elephant.

I seem to remember reading that they can refuse admission for excessively loud exhausts.

A buddy of mine was there a week ago. They did a dB check indeed. He also encountered an elephant (I did too last time I was there) so yea better ride carefully.

Some interesting places over the river, Wat Sakla, real floating market area and impressive Buddhist displays through a tunnel under the main building. Phan Thai Norasing shrine, the daft bloke who insisted the king chopped his head of when he mis steered the boat he was in, even though the king pardoned him, nice walking area and about 100k chicken statues. Visit monkey bridge off Rama 2 walks along the klong number of monkeys varies, feeding them better than soi dogs!

For day trip

Khao Yai is nice but they are very strict about exhaust noise, and once you're in the park the mood isn't for spirited riding

If you're serious about riding, route 3199 around the reservoir in Karnchanaburi is the best twisty road within daytrip distance from Bangkok, plenty of restaurant in the water along the way

Not really a day trip but I'm planning a weekend trip. Kanchanaburi or Khao yai. Erawan national park is a bit further out than what Khao yai is but which one would you choose over the weekend?

Khao Yai never did much for me, vs Surat Thani landscape or CM/CR.

Enjoyed sitting by river watching life go by, though funnily noisy at times.

... Go a bit further for some uniqueness, Mon Bridge

... Have Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park, for history buffs.

... Not a fan of 'war' memorials, as prefer to forget earlier generation of stupidity.  Plus being a Yank, not much meaning for us.  Visited, but thought quite boring.  Brits & Aussies, & SEA locals, might conx to it.

... couple Nat Parks, if your thing, though surrounding countryside just as nice, free and not touristy.

Much more to do in Kan.

As the other guy mentions a trip up to Mon bridge is worth it for an overnight stay, last part of the ride is good and a couple nice places to stop and see on the way up or back.

Agree with Kan city on the river, very mellow and some nice hotels to relax at.

Kanch is good, Sai Yok down the road. Spend a week there easy.

Khao Yai was lame I thought.
