With more and more of smart appliances being pushed has anyone considered the privacy offered to the user of such items? I am not referring to the manufacturer but the individual user? Hackers will inevitably gain access to these devices and apart from causing inconvenience to the user could use them for malicious purposes. Does anyone here have these devices and if so have you taken them at face value concerning security or have you looked into the privacy issues they raise?

Yes, some people, like computer experts, think about the risks.

But most people don't know about them and don't want to know about them and just ignore them.

 

It's like facebook or something like this: People should think about what they post and they should think about who can see this information. But many people just post everything for anybody to see. What could possibly go wrong...

It is very scary when so many people just assume that everything is safe and secure. You are right "what could go wrong?" just scary to think of the possible consequences.

my friends literally say "I don't care that Chinese spy on me" and "I don't care that the home security camera sends its video stream to Chinese servers".

we could not jugde people for their fetishes.

Doesn't make sense to me. We already interact with the internet via terminals like a computer or smartphone. We don't become "things" in IOT. Sounds more like some 5G Bill Gates flat earth theory.

 

IOT simply means that there is a trend of many devices being now interconnected because hardware to do so became cheap and easy enough to integrate which allows for some more or less valueable features that had not been possible before.

 

History tells us complex things have bugs because noone wants to put in the massive effort to secure a system to a very high degree. And so we'll see a lot of the IOT devices abused. I don't think there are solutions on the horizon. It'll just be a bit of a mess. But hey. As the world gets more technologocially advanced, it becomes more complex. That's the nature of the beast.

 

To answer the OPs question: personally unless a device brings me a noticable advantage by being on the internet I simply don't hook it up to it. I don't expect them to be super secure.

Humanity will become robots to serve their masters. AI is a potentially very dangerous thing. That is not just my opinion but was stated by Stephen Hawkins.

Yes, I use a single unified open source system that doesn't collect data (AFIK), if possible I try to flash with FOS software that doesn't report usage.

 

I don't use any cloud based platforms / devices (with the exception of a smart rice cooker). If my internet goes down, my devices still work (apart from the rice cooker) - but its a bit pointless, generally, if the internet goes down, there's no electricity anyway. Some items I have LAN control but with proprietary software, I try to block them calling home but its difficult due to hardcoded DNS - I presume they are just reporting usage.

 

External cameras are on a closed network that is accessed remotely via standalone software, again not cloud. Internal cameras are on a separate system, with no external access and no NVR. just live feed.

 

I don't use a router / firewall supplied by HuaWei to your ISP.

 

You can go as far as putting all your IOT devices on a separate VLAN and then close that to the outside world if you are that worried. I don't, maybe one day I will, but at the moment I have some pretty sweet automations I don't want to mess up.

 

I don't really worry that a device is going to allow a backdoor into my pirated porn collection, but I think it doesn't hurt to learn how to protect ourselves.

AI = Artificial Intelligence

Not same, very different! 

And being ignorant doesn't make the situation any better.

Yes, sorry, the pihole doesn't block them because they have hard coded DNS - Its only about  6 yeelight lightbulbs. I don't use the cloud control, but I can see them reporting back. I presume that they are reporting their status, i'm not so tinfoil hat as to worry about data farming, but I do worry about surveillance, it's a pretty sure thing that all your cloud stored video data is being analyzed by AI.

 

Maybe one day, I will move all IOT onto a different VLAN, but at the moment, I could do without the headaches.
