The smell of chemicals from a leak at a factory in Nakhon Pathom that started early morning yesterday had reached Bangkok five hours later, reported Siam Rath.

Diphenyl oxide and Biphenyl had leaked from drums via pipes into the atmosphere at the Indorama Polyester Industries factory on Petchkasem Road in Khun Kaeo sub-district of Nakhon Chaisri.

This happened around 6.20 am and local residents were told to stay indoors and don masks.

At 10.30 am Nakhon Pathom governor Surasak Charoensirichot was at the factory.

Sathit international section of Mahidol University closed for the day at 11 am and students at Suan Kularb school were told to remain inside buildings.

Before midday the smell from the leak had reached Pin Klao in Bangkok and areas of Nonthaburi on the outskirts of the Thai capital to the north west.

It seems that the masks are the miracle answers to every health problem.  Even if we all know they won't do a speck of good filtering out the toxic gas, perhaps the smell of one's own breath will "make it better."  Everyone is used to smelling their own breath by now, anyhow--must be comforting.

Useless advice. Closed cicuit air breathing sets might help. No have? Head for the hills!
